Seattle residents, city attorney push to outlaw public pot smoking

What a surprise that , yet again, the few fuck it up for the many.
Seattle residents, city attorney push to outlaw public pot smoking
Less than a year after Washington state residents voted to decriminalize possession of up to one ounce of marijuana, some residents of the state's largest city want its public use outlawed in their town.
Q13Fox.com reports that despite the fact that the new state law prohibits toking in public, pot smokers have been puffing away all over Seattle, and it's making life difficult for a lot of non-users.
"It’s definitely out of control," said bus driver Kalu Davis, who told Q13Fox.com that he sees people smoking pot every day at bus shelters.
"They blow it right into my face, and, because of that, I get light-headed. At that point I then have to stop the bus. I can't continue any further because I'm inebriated from the secondhand smoke."
Seattle City Attorney Peter Holmes helped sponsor the decriminalization law last year. Now, he's pushing a city ordinance that would make it illegal to light up outdoors, under penalty of a $103 fine.
"It's important that, while we celebrate the incredible shift that Washington voters put into law last November, we stay sober-minded about this," said Holmes, who added "This is about regulating marijuana, it's not about turning this into the Wild, Wild West,"

"I'm inebriated from the secondhand smoke."
This is utterly bizarre; I've been to massive 4:20 gatherings before I even smoked weed and have not had any effect at all from the smoke. The sober people who were there did not have any effect from the smoke either.
How about simply fining people who smoke around bus shelters? It is ridiculous to ban outdoor smoking all over the city. Consider the gas exhaust from all the cars: much more harmful. Smoke dissipates in the air; there is no reason why people shouldn't be able to toke in most places; they should just keep certain specific areas (bus shelters, the smoke-free restaurants and patios, public buildings) smoke free.

There is a recent example in The Netherlands where proposed legislation was indeed dismissed because of this problem. In the end, a state of legal limbo doesn't really work.

Why? I've known fully grown adults that get high off of secondhand smoke.
I also know shit-for-brains that would find it funny to blow pot smoke in other peoples faces.

maybe like 1 in every 1000 people. It's definitely not going to happen frequently among strangers at bus stops.

They are in no way inhaling it enough to get high, and if they did I can only imagine they have had the worst COPD and on a chance of a good day they take that breath of a life time and hold it in.
750ug is the baseline dose for effects, smoke in in the air after being hit therefore its diluted in the air. You have to get that shit and hold it in
In FL people smoke at bus stops all the time and no one other than the smokers get high.

When their eyes are beet red, and the signs are clear... bullshit. Just because you may have never met someone doesn't mean it doesn't happen.
Yes, it is infrequent, but assholes are everywhere.

I've been around the Seattle area my whole life and I don't smell the stuff anymore than I did 3 years ago. People have always smoked weed in Seattle...they're just using I-502 as an excuse to complain more. I see more people shooting up heroin than I see lighting a joint but nobody complains about that.
I know I'm biased as a pot smoker but cigarettes bother me a hell of a lot more than weed smoke...

Sure, that claim may not have been made directly, but that sure seemed to be where it was going. I'm betting one person blew smoke somewhere near this bus driver, he got all pissed off, stopped the bus because he was "high" and suddenly it's "they" (pot smokers) blow smoke in my face. The way it's worded makes it sound like a regular thing.
I highly doubt this guy has people doing this more than once in a blue moon. If he's actually getting high from second hand weed smoke, it's because he's trying to get high from it.
More to the point though, I don't think these people should just be lighting up anywhere. We have designated areas for alcohol use, and in many places tobacco as well. If we're going to have legal recreational marijuana, we should probably try to be mature and responsible about it.

Exactly. People who think marijuana is a magical plant with no ill effects are as if not more ridiculous than those who equate it with meth. People should be mature and laws should be evidence based. Also, maybe some of you who think it is "impossible" to get high from second hand smoke aren't taking into account tolerances when you cite personal experience...

Absolutely. The potency of second hand marijuana smoke is also dependent upon how long the smoke has been in someone's lungs. If people are lighting up joints, the 2ndhand is full-strength coming off the end of the joint. Have you ever blown smoke into an animal's face? They definitely get high.
