Yeah those ABM look a bit psilly, I've got some grain masters just coming online!
Anyway, contribootin with some second flush reishi pics. They really seem to be enjoying the porch life, and I really enjoy seeing 'what they're gonna do next'.

Been experimenting with Agrocybe aegerita on straight, pasteurized straw.

That is interesting Woodland. Seems to like it. I have never tried aegerita on straw. Have you grown them out on wood also? I would be interested to know if it affected the taste.

Never have grown them on sawdust, so I can't compare taste. However, these were really flavorful with good shelf life as well. I'm sure yields are better on sawdust though. These 4lb blocks yielded an average of .5lb each on the first flush. Second flush is coming in right now.

I have grown it on wood, and it worked great. Got 1.6lbs off a 5.5lb block after two flushes. It also tasted amazing. I'd be curious to try the taste difference between the straw and wood.

I don't think I would complain. Very nice results. I have a few grain jars in the closet. I may have to give them a shot on straw.

I loved the lion's mane I got from the farmer's market when I lived in Denver. That was several years ago and the only time I've tried it. If mine is half as good as I remember those tasting I'll be pretty happy
Great thread idea, BTW!

Those look great, Versicolor! Much darker pigmentation on the caps and more of stem than mine.

I agree Versicolor - those are nice (as are Woodland's!). I like the no-casing thing. I don't case. I notice yours pinned around the edges. Mine too. But generously!

Psilly as in Psilocybe?

Sure! I had a few jars of way over-incubated grain spawn I didn't know what to do with, so I just directly cased the grain with an unpasteurized mix of 50/50 peat moss/vermiculite with lime, gypsum, and a small pinch of soils from my garden added in. I put them in my aquarium about 3 weeks ago (I can't really remember), and so far this is the only one that's fruiting. The other have some primordia/hyphal knots forming though.

Woodland: Nice aa's ; and on straw, impressive! What strain is that?
Versi: Nice aa's as well. 1.5lbs/block is awesome. What substrate recipe and strain did you use?
Solarity: As usual, heady ass mushrooms.

I used the typical sterilized sawdust, supplemented at around 35% with bran, and gypsum. The strain is 'swordbelt' from Aloha. The second flush looked somewhat different, as they were grown outside.
I think the key is to allow a long consolidation period after colonization. Somewhere around a month. To allow this, I used a filter bag with a fine mesh filter. (0.2µm) And then roll down the top of the bag, and expose it to fruiting conditions. (which is 10° cooler)
This however, is the best pin set I've ever seen.

Thanks, Aleon. Not sure the origin of the strain. I picked up in a trade somewhere along the way. 2nd flush was puny, maybe .25lb.

That was picked off a straw log. Ingredients, straw and practice!

I like the ABM's raceme.
Try this! Cut up lions mane into halves or quarters and make a curry sautee. Serve on top of fresh rice and greens with naan; Can't go wrong. Worth a shot!
