dry casing mix after micro-sterilize
    #1860420 - 08/28/03 09:56 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

My bud micro-sterilized some casing mix (50/50) after he let it cool, he put it on top of the crumbled cake, and misted the mix well....is this ok? should he over saturate it before microwaving to make up for the lost water during the bake?

I just oversaturate it and afterwards squeeze out the extra water with alcohol wiped hands

You'll be fine IMO... Just inject the casing(s) with sterile water if there's a lot of de-hydration....

you can squeeze the plastic bins. work fine.it will just take a few more days for the colo. of the casinng layer.next time try not to mist your casing.cause your are going to get bored to sterialized the water in the future projects..a handful squeeze and some water driplets. thats the perfect ratio and do not forget to close the top of your myco in the micro.

This is my preferred method of preparing my casing 101+ mix. I always add extra water content (full field saturation), then nuke the hell out of it for 30 minutes or more (on a low setting). I use 1/2 pint jars with plastic lids and poly-fill filters. Usually the material comes out too dry, but not entirely. I prefer it to be dry, as it usually indicates well heating of the material. It is easier and faster than a pressure cooker, and when cooked long enough, a microwave will sterilize just as well.

I then apply the casing mix dry, and use pre-sterilized spring water to re-hydrate (collected by hand and pressure cooked in large amounts that I use to prepare both substrate, and casing mixes). I usually add a tiny percentage of peroxide to the water, in case there is anything hiding in my mist bottle.

As long as your water is clean, you will have no problems with your method. But, try to avoid adding more than a pinch of peroxide, as it will stunt mycelium growth initially (exponentially with concentration).
