use of the water which grains were boiled in?????
    #1846428 - 08/24/03 07:41 PM (20 years, 7 months ago)

Can it be added to poo+straw substrate instead of plain water?... (it surely can be added but is there anything benefical about it?) I will try it anyway but any feedback?.... Thnx!

edit*

i won't mist them using that..... This thread is a discussion for any creative usage of the water which grains were boiled in..... For dunking, adding to substrate,etc....

I don't think you should use it on casings, to mist, buy i think it is a great idea for the poo+straw substrate. I think on a casing it would just attract contams, just my guess though. Good luck, keep us posted!

It seems to me that doing that would introduce a higher risk of contamination however it may be beneficial if you could maintain a level of extreme sterility around your casings. Extra nutrients means extra goodstuff..

adding to poo/straw would be good, but a casing layer should be non-nutritious. i think spraying the casing would be asking for contams... you could inject this into your casings, though. i'd say sterilize it first...

good point... i missed that!...

I think i'll just use it for dung+straw substrate... And maybe cakes can be dunked in it.... God, i'm so creative today... But i don't do cakes....  :tongue2: I'll try injecting it as soon as i get a 3rd flush from a casing... we'll see!....

No. Don't use it to mist casings -- this stuff is pure bacteria food. %)

OTOH, it'd be -great- to add to any preparations that're going to be sterilized, instead of normal water.

This stuff should contain carbohydrates and other nutes.

i've tried something similar, after i pasteurised the straw, i used the water to hydrate some vermiculite.i added the water while it was still very hot and put the lid on the container to hold that temp. for awhile.i havn't used it yet but i plan to.o ya and the verm isn't for a casing layer it's for the bottom of the casing container.

hmmm, nutrients in the bottom sounds like bad news, contam attractant.

why would nutrients at the bottom of a casing attract contams?the rest of the casing consists of nutirous material, the risk factor is the same it's been sterlized.if it's going to contaminate,it would have done so even if i didn't use that water.and since it's at the bottom no air born contams can get to it,the top of a uncolonized casing is a risk not the bottom.

guess i'll have to agree.... if you do not place a non-nutrient layer at the bottom or you do, that doesn't make a difference... I always place the colonized grain at the bottom (nutrient) of the casing tray and then other layers.... Always worked for me...

after the first flush or the second you probably see the casing shrink and some space around the substrate occur. it's a perfect condition for contams to get into the substrate, sure if you don't patch the sides with some non-nutrients...
A non-nutrient layer at the bottom and some at the sides would prevent contams and provide better hydration...
correct me if I'm not...

casing at the shrunk sides is necessary for sure... I agree that... Let's make a growlog with two casings... Same strain, same substrate, same conditions... One with non-nutrient layer at the bottom and one not... That's the best way to tell i guess...

i'm alrdy on it man,the strain is Argentina.

there's two casings, both have 1 inch of vermiculite at the bottom one is just plain water and the other is water that came from pasteurized straw.both were sterilized in the microwave twice for 5 mins.the bulk that is used is wheat straw(pasteurized for 2 hours).Substrate is about 4 inches deep.
The casing layer will be a 40/60 of coco coir and verm.

thier currently incubating so it'll be awhile before i have results.

i think there's a big vairable here,if the casing contaminates before the substrate is fully colonized and pulling away from sides,i don't think that has anything to do with the nutrious verm at the bottom.what i'm looking for is contamination after the first or second flush,or when the substrate pulls away from the side of container exposing the nutrious verm.but i'm going to still patch the side(i think);it might defeat the purpose of this experiment.hummmbut i'm not going to let the green meanies have my casing not without a fight.

ok so the question is, nutrious vermiculite is it going to cause contams after first or second flush,or will make the most bad ass of all shrooms

i keep thinking of other things that i havn't made very clear to ya'll,it's my second experiment so blablablabla

well... let us know how it goes... And add one casing without a non-nutrient layer at the bottom if still possible... So we can get all the possible results... The difference can be seen in long term though.... At the 3rd or 4th flush... But would be a helpfull experiment anyway... Good luck!
