I'm all broke. My answers are the same as everyone else.

I think one of the main things that separate the poor from the middle class is vacations.  When people tell me about vacations they've taken it really just blows my mind.  vacations to other countries are like, outside my comprehension.  I don't give a shit about where people went or what they saw the only question i can think to ask is "how much did that cost?"

Hey man its not that expensive to travel abroad, just an fyi if you plan it out in advance you can get there and back for about a grand, then its all hotels and shit like that. Its expensive but it doesn't have to cost 10 grand

People living on $10-20k a year don't have a grand to spend on vacations.

I frequently do, if I make $1000 a month then a good $400 can be saved. By the end of a year just saving $200 a month that's enough to make it to overseas and back depending on what you plan on doing.

wow...my rent is 1100 on it's own and that's considered cheap.

Then I have groceries for a family, so that's about 600 a month.

Then internet, phone, cell phone(I just cut the phone because we split up though), child support payment, insurance, gasoline, house gas, power, city water, sewage, clothes for growing kids, school activities, toys, school supplies, extracurricular activities for kids(sports, daycare for the young one, dance, etc), ETC

the list goes on.

At 100,000k a year...I am definitely not rich.  I am comfortable.  Saving up for the year so I can take the kids to disneyland next year.  I've never been to the states and is honestly the only destination I want to go...that and georgia

Where you going in the states?

How little you can live on depends mostly on your lifestyle, there's no way someone with a family could live off as little as me  but for a bachelor who grew up in the bayou without AC eating ketchup sandwhiches and drinking water out of the bathtub, its not difficult

Also, your living expenses are less than $600/mo?

Well keep in mind that I'm in my early 20s and still working on my trade, my current lifestyle revolves around making sure I have enough time to work on my trade and spending as little money as possible so I don't have to spend more time working a shitty day job.

Yes even living in big cities I can comfortably keep my expenses down to the range of $600-800 depending on the exact situation.

Please break down $600/mo for me, I'm curious.

My expenses are around $1600/mo and that's just rent, food, cell phone, car insurance, etc.

A low salary is around a dollar a day - what Indian child beggars earn. If you're eating food 3 times a day, shut the fuck up about getting by because you have it better than 70% of the world

1k barely, makes it from the airport to the hotel in london.

100k , is where middle class BEGINS.

That's just bullshit.  You can get a round trip flight to London for under $900.

Been there.  It also isn't enjoyable or comfortable.  Not for me anyway.

Yea this is very true I try to keep it in mind when greed gnaws at my mind. Westerners even poor ones live better than ancient kings at least in some ways.

wow.  just wow.

The misfortune of others in no way dictates what i deem to be a low salary.

This is exactly what this thread is about.  Asking people's opinion on what is low.  You say a dollar.  I agree.

I say under 40k is also low, you don't agree.

It's been nice agreeing to disagree with you

I'm happy that you're happy with 3 meals a day

I sure as hell want more then that. :P

I can't put my finger on it, it's just something i don't like about you from how you post in this thread.  And I can assure you, it has nothing to do with your income.  I also make 6 figures...you aren't a big deal and either am I, so chill

Fair enough on the eye damage though

Sure thing man, there are a lot of different scenarios though (I move a lot)
So if I'm staying in an apartment or renting a room, the price has been from $200-450 a month depending one where (all in or near big cities, West Coast and East Coast).
Food $100-150 a month, drugs $100 a month, transportation $0-400 a month.

So the most I had to spend was about $1100 to live in a large (overpriced for the area) apartment, when I was fresh out of my parents house.
Most of the time its something a little over $600: Rent $400, food $100, drugs $100 (bike for transport)

Now its going down because I'll be living in a van, since working more isn't really an option and I need transport I can't afford an apartment at this stage. I've slept out on the street before and gone without food, so to me this is more exciting than any sort of problem.

Its all relative to your lifestyle, if I could have $40k and still retain my priorities then I would take it, but anything I could do to make that money would waste more time than its worth as it would delay actually making a living off my trade (which will provide more than I have now).

Sorry for the long post

I love your passion.  I am also a musician and wanted to go down that road.  I gave up without ever really trying.  I still play and record though

But I watched many friends go down that road.  ALL of them are almost 30 now and not a single one made it.

Some went to college and got all sorts of music engineering degrees, music theory degrees.  Others went to Vancouver and toronto and played tons of shows, even put out some albums...others became session musicians.  Others fell out and ended up doing something else related to the scene.  Others gave up and went a got a trade.

Point being, no one made it.  And this isn't to knock you or say you won't...I actually give you mad props because I know how hard it is and wish to hell that all your time living on the streets and in a van pays off.

Thanks man I really appreciate that, after sticking to the goal for a few years all my doubts are gone. Now I know a lot of people making a living in the scene, most musicians I meet think highly of me and I'm generally good at getting attention.
The music scene is notoriously competitive but its not impossible to break, most of the fight it seems is just sticking to it.

What the fuck is a low salary to you people?:aweshit: Cause honestly if you have benefits and are sitting on 40k a year I consider you a spoiled bitch if you complain about that shit

40k is low bud.  Where I'm from, it's tough to live decently on 40.

I'd say 40 is low.  50-70 is comfortable.  70+ is ideal.

I'm making about 100 a year right now and I'm not rich by no means.

But I do have kids and whatnot, so I think that makes a big difference

Pretty much this.

100k is rich. I don't give a fuck what anyone says. Its god damn rich and its sickening that people try to convince themselves otherwise. Lying to yourself doesn't change reality nor does it count for modesty

Bullshit. Everything is relative.

In my city a 1 bedroom bungalow will run you $350,000.
My brother bought a 3 bedroom house with an attic and basement in NYS for $16,000.
So what goes for $16,000 in NYS you could sell for 600K-700K here.....But 100K salary is the same for everyone, and if you disagree you are in denial.

How many hours per week do you work?
What do you pay annually in taxes?

Maybe if you want more money you should go out and get it, instead of complaining that everyone else has too much and takes it for granted.
