substrate storage

can you keep substrate stored before usage or do you need to innoculate right away? i already have 5 pint jars birthing right now and no more room to grow. ive got 7 jars p.c.ing right now as we speak, and i've got no where to put them. it wont harm them to refridgerate them or just at room temp. will it? since they've already been sterilized they should keep, correct?

As long as no contam will get in, you can store it for as long as you want.

If you want to be extra safe, put the jars in a ziplock bag, put that bag in another ziplock bag, and put that in the fridge. They should last you at least a month like that.

If you've already PCd them, just leave the tape on and store them. They'll keep for a few months. The danger is that they might dry out in that time, so keep the tape on the holes.

If you haven't PCd them yet, you need to. The moist BRF won't keep unless it's sterilized.

Alright... your goal here is to seal the jars after they've been sterilized. Once sealed, the moisture content will remain correct, and since there are no living organisms inside, they'll keep for a long time.

You can just use foil over the jars, (no tape) and if you handle them carefully, nothing should get in them.

If I'm going to keep them for a while before inoculating, I prefer to tape the holes and PC with the lids loose. Then, when they've cooled, I snug down the lid and store them. Make sure they're cool before you snug down the lid or you'll create a slight vacuum inside which will suck in contaminated air when you're ready to unseal and inoculate them.

Hope this helps...

Here is a picture of a popcorn jar that was pressure cooked on 6/22/03 (taken today). No signs of contamination, but the water content is unknown (im not opening it yet, im going to use it in a few months when a syringe I have hits the year old point). It has a poly-fill filter on it for air exchange, and has just been sitting out in the open air. This is all done for shits and giggles, but I may post results.

I think you will be fine as long as you sealed the holes. A jar can last a long time, I have shot jars up that were almost a month old and had them germinate fine. They were a little dry, so I just added more spore juice...

a friend of mine just did a pf cake-to-grain transfer with popcorn jars that had been pc'd 8 weeks prior. she said the grain looked kinda dry but went for it anyway and after only 5 days in the incubator, there is strong mycelium spreading throughout every one of the jars. this is also her first time using popcorn and she is really impressed!

hey underground, tell your friend to inject some water into those grain jars

if it drys out too much the mycelia will stall

inject like 3 - 4CCs per jar, and if possible, in different places
