I have never really listened to any music from them, but I have seen what an incredible following they have always had. So I figured I would give them a try. So any of you deadheads got any reccomendations for a newbie. I don't mind purchasing a CD if you all could reccomend a good one.
Thanks.

Well, go here, here, and here.
Get "Without a net", I think it's pretty cool. Look for dick's picks cds, those are live shows. Also, listen to some stuff by the string cheese incident. There good too.

I've heard many people claim that Garcia didn't like any of the studio-recorded stuff they released.... apparently he liked his live stuff MUCH more - Dick's Picks, as suggested by gdman420, has been recommended to me from numerous sources, so give that a shot if interested

Or you could check out A View from the Vault. These are really nice DVDs of various 80s and 90s shows. They just released VFTV IV, Oakland Stadium July 24, 1987 & Anaheim Stadium July 26, '87. I haven't seen these yet but I'm sure they're good. This is the period that the Dead had they're one and only big hit, Touch of Grey. Jerry was coming off of some health problems and was very fit, had lost weight and the rest. I'd imagine these are pretty good shows energy wise.
The only other VFTV I could vouch for is the Alpine Valley show. Jer just tears up a first set ending Deal. I mean ripz it! Rest of the show is good too.

Good stuff.
