I have been wanting to try some lions mane. I just need to find a good culture. There are a lot of nice grows on this thread I am glad that it got started.

I have some grey oysters and some ABM in the Martha right now.  However, I also have these intriguing things:

These jars of ATL 7 have been sitting here almost a year.  Last August, to be precise.  I have no idea what I'm waiting for!

This is a bag of ganoderma curtisii.  It's so beautiful!!  It is starting to make antlers.  Most of the mycelium turns yellow, unlike g. lucidum.

I have more but the rest haven't pinned yet.

Jeff, as you know, this is my first time to see a bag of shitake 'popcorning.'  It is pretty thrilling, really.  The last time, I thought I was growing lion's mane, and couldn't figure out why the bag was turning brown!  I set it outside, and it made some very large and surprising fruits.  This time, I'm hoping to do better.  Thanks for the shitake advice!

How are the shiitakes doing M?  they should be getting closer now.

I have been toying with inoculating larger wood pieces in various forms with shiitake and other wood lovers.  Here is a shiitake stack starting to produce:

I took log, cut it into 8" slices with a shape chain saw to get clean cuts, and then re-assembled the slices into a stack with the contents of a colonized bag of shiitake, spread like peanut butter. Then I wound strips of burlap into a rope and covered the slice gaps to keep out slugs.

I keep the stacks wet with a leaky milk carton on a burlap pad on top of the top slice.  This is fed by a timed water system. The stack that is producing was built in a large plastic bag, to hold moisture at the base.  The stack next to it is identical in all ways except that is is set on a pad of gravel, instedd of a plastic bag.  It is not pinning yet, so the plastic bag base wins out!

Here is a look at the stack and pole watering setup:

The producing stack is covered by a remay tube to thwart slugs, which LOVE shiitakes!

Cool pics.  Why did u decide to inoculate logs like that instead of the standard drill and fill?  Any benefits you've noticed?

I tried many method on various forms of big wood: logs, long stumps, stacks, poles.  The stacks were the first to produce -- I think I am getting more spawn into the wood volume than with the other types of big wood inoculations.  On poles, long stumps, and logs, I inoculated spawn into drilled holes.

But, rather than jack this thread,I think I will create a separate thread on what I have tried and learned with inoculating big wood.
