I think you're probably spot on with the heat, not enough light, and picked too late (I wasn't going to mention that, I do it all the time and they're still great - but watch out for spores!).

If the same culture is growing at 67 and still pale though, I think it may be one that prefers cooler temperatures.  This will greatly improve the quality of the fruits.  Not sure what winter temps in IL are, but if you could move the growing area near a colder place (I used a sliding glass door in Maine winter - it was almost freezing temps by it), I think you'll see more color and better quality fruits.  If that's not possible, try other strains of blues.  Some tolerate warmer temperatures a lot better than others.  You could also try regular pearl oysters if you can't get lower temps.

Not that there's anything wrong with those results though, they look great.  Just a few thoughts if you're striving for perfection

Those pinks are gorgeous!
Are you saying you added no nutes?
That is soo much more impressive than my straight-straw grow!

I've been away from the boards for a while, been busy with the farm and whatnot, but I thought I'd pop back in to share!

Some maitake from last spring

Stropharia from the outdoor patch

Summertime golden oysters

Once the snow melts it's time to fire up more maitake and nameko bags for spring!

I started a nice big stropharia bed in my chicken run this past fall.  Hopefully the sawdust spawn had time to jump to the wood chips and establish itself.  We will be seeing in a few months I imagine if it worked, and I'll certainly post pics!

Still wondering if the chickens are going to eat all the mushrooms... I've tried to feed them mushrooms before and they don't seem all that interested so hopefully they leave them for me.  But the main point of the bed is to break down all the chicken shit and reduce the smell.  Stropharia is supposed to work really well for that.  Plus the fact that it's mycelium doesn't seem to mind being "disturbed", ie; scratched and pecked by chickens, I'll bet it does well.  We shall see!

This is really interesting, I think i read something similar elsewhere. Makes me wonder if king stroph would do well using similar substrates to cubes. Would be interesting to test out some of the more higher yielding cube subs with king stroph

It would be interesting, just remember (I believe) SRA needs wood in the sub.  I also think (unless things have changed and someone's discovered a new method), that they also need a natural bacteria or something from nature to be cultivated.  I'm going from memory here, but I think some have had success kind of "casing them" with dirty/non pasteurized topsoil/humus from out in the forest.  I think someone got them to grow well in buckets this way.

You can grow them on sterilized supplemented sawdust. Upon full colonization top them with pasteurized casing. I've read a bunch of different opinions on testing out different concentrations of microbial slurries added to the casing layer, but a pasteurized casing would work.
Not my photo, but this dude(Tradd Cotter) did it successfully-
