America's Full-Blown Painkiller Epidemic Detailed In Two Minutes

"Overdoses involving prescription painkillers are at epidemic levels and now kill more Americans than heroin and cocaine combined." – Thomas Frieden, M.D., M.P.H., Director of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) As of May 2012, Americans consume 80% of the world's painkillers.
Abuse of these painkillers now kills more U.S. citizens than heroine and cocaine combined.
These two facts alone suggest that the war on conventional drugs is misguided.
And there's much more evidence that painkiller abuse is now a full-blown epidemic in America.
12 Palms Recovery Center has put together this short video infographic (sources) that gives the frightful rundown: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=2ndOZ1Ldhps
If that doesn't do it, here are some facts from a September 2012 Pew study that drew from data from the DEA and the CDC:
Sales of prescription painkillers to pharmacies and health care providers have increased by more than 300% since 1999. In 2009, the number of people killed by drug poisoning, driven largely by increases in painkiller abuse, surpassed motor vehicle fatalities for the first time. In 2010, more people aged 12 and older abused or were dependent on prescription painkillers than cocaine, heroin, stimulants, and sedatives combined. Deaths from prescription painkiller overdose in the U.S. have more than tripled between 1999 and 2008. In 2009, there were nearly 500,000 emergency room visits spurred by abuse of prescription painkillers. The annual cost to health insurers derived from the non-medical use of prescription painkillers is $72.5 billion. In 2010, 1 in every 20 people in the U.S. age 12 and older reported using prescription painkillers non-medically (i.e. About 12 million people, or more than the population of Ohio). Here are a couple of maps that break it down by state:

Guys..If you do some digging, you can actually find out, without paying a penny, which county in each state is pumping out the most narcotics and it will detail it for you as well.. It will tell you how many Schedule II,III,IV,and V drugs are prescribed.. It will tell you how many prescriptions for a C-II were wrote for that month.. Its fuckin NUTS..the statistics are absolutely insane!! I like in KY and I am very familiar with the epidemic and seeing these two charts doesnt surprise me one bit.. The other states along with KY surprised me,but KY itsself did not.
What a shame..
If marijuana was reclassified into its proper schedule, which imo is a C-VI(4) then things would drastically change!!

I think "drastically change" is a bit unrealistic, I don't see why an opiate addict would suddenly take up an interest in marijuana if it were re-scheduled. Or why doctors with years of bias and tons of freebies from drug reps would change the status quo.
Not to say i don't want to see it rescheduled I really do.

I just had a friend OD on suboxone, klonopins, and methadone two weeks ago. I know this was his own fault but still, if the doctors didn't throw this shit around like candy it wouldn't be so easy to get.

Kicking is very hard, I have friends on Suboxone, and none have dabs or - Iboga1ne. In fact I don't even know if anyone has done that on the latter, will have to check erowid. My friend with MS gets relief from shitty homegrown swag. I am so happy about that... and grateful. Sad to see the state of our nation. Moreover, sad knowing that so many of us are in Pain. As well as Peril... keep safe y'all PEACE

Heroin is everywhere. I rolled up on my friend to dose him on some clean liquid i had acquiredwhen i happened upon him slinging heroin. He didnt want me to drip him? Wtf? Free liquid? But whatever . I told him "I'm not trying to be a drug snob, but that shit ruins lives, I'm trying to give you love and enlightenment and you offer m dope?" that's some fucked up shit. Then, two days later
Dude Got stabbed 6 times in the stomache/chest at a bar the other night after we parted ways. We rode motorcycles together for a grip though. That heroin is the dog food for real. Makes hippies into junkies. Turning down a drop of L? Who does that?
Also...don't trust anyone that won't get dripped for free. That's just insane. They are either a cop, or on the wrong path for the L anyway. Heroin is ruining people's lives here, perpetuated by the pills.

The high amount of overdoses in comparison to prescriptions. For some reason I related that to suicide, but that is probably not the case.

No big surprise here in Tennessee. They're always busting people for illegal painkiller transactions. In fact, they just indicted 7 folks for it earlier this week.

The profit that can be made from any painkiller prescription is absurd. People charging a dollar a mg I'm not surprised a lot of people go to dope, being much cheaper and stronger.

I'm very sorry for your loss. I can't imagine losing a friend, especially like that. All feelings pass in time but keep him in your thoughts and heart and he'll always be with you. Be well.
