Video: Woman Having Diabetes Attack Handcuffed, Left On Ground By Police
    #18584882 - 07/20/13 01:11 PM (10 years, 9 months ago)

By Jonathan Wolfe, Fri, July 19, 2013

Troubling video footage from a police cruiser dashcam in Santa Fe, New Mexico is making its way around the internet today.

The footage was taken after a woman rear-ended a car in Sana Fe. Police deputies are seen walking up to the woman’s car that had just caused the accident, smashing her windows in, dragging her on to the ground, handcuffing her, and leaving her unattended.

The police report from the incident says officers believed the woman, Revina Garcia, was drunk at the time. But Garcia wasn’t drunk. She was having a diabetes attack.

"I was just lost, I was just lost," Garcia said. "I just didn't know how to open the door.” The police report says Garcia was only murmuring “I’m sorry” when asked by police why she wouldn’t comply with their requests. After seeing how disoriented Garcia was, officers assumed she must have been drunk.

Garcia took her story to the news because she believes officers need more training on recognizing medical emergencies. She says the insulin pump clipped to her waistband should have given officers a clue as to what was going on.

“I'm surprised I didn't go into a coma in the back of that police car,” Garcia said. “Most people if their blood sugars are in the 20s are comatose. If there's education this wouldn't happen. This wouldn't have happened.”

Santa Fe Sheriff Robert Garcia says his department will review what went wrong during the incident.

“In this case there was no resistance,” Garcia said. “We are looking at that very seriously.”

"What concerns me is there is no need to lay someone on the ground for that amount of time. There were other deputies around that could have assisted in at least sitting her up or having her placed in a cruiser,” the sheriff added.

Here is the dashcam footage from the incident:

I think this is relevant to the SNS because it shows how cop can do nearly whatever they want if you "look affected by a drug".

They (making an unwanted generalization here) despise people so much, it wouldn't have hurt to ask is she had a medical condition or something first

I've never seen someone behaving while having a diabetic attack before though, but like she said, the insulin pump on her waist is kind of a big clue on what was going on...

My wife is a severe type 1 diabetic and when her sugars get high she will appear drunk, slurring her words and uncoordinated. When she goes low she may appear stoned drawing out her speech and unable to focus on things. I shudder to think about scenarios like this.

I don't have any problem with what the police did, seems like a misunderstanding and they were justified in being sketched out.

if someone won't do what you say and they keep saying "i'm sorry i'm sorry" that could mean they are about to do something stupid or harmful.

Cops aren't psychic and she wasn't obeying their commands.

doesn't even sound like they caused her any bodily harm they just made a simple mistake, how are they supposed to know if she's diabetic or not?  she didn't tell them.

I'm sure that they called medics as soon as they got there as well because she was disoriented and in an accident.

what else could they have done?  :what:

I think the problem is that for police, it's fine to treat drunkards like dirt. And since they don't need to test your blood before they arrest you, cops often make sweeping generalizations that an impaired driver is a drunk driver and bang on them before realizing the truth. It's unfortunate that they have to deal with so many drunks, but part of their job is assessing all situations individually and not getting into stuff like this. I can't defend these guys for their obvious mistake.

Drunk people behind the wheel deserve to be treated like dirt IMO.

Although I do think that so-called "field sobriety tests" are too ambiguous.

Should be a breathalyzer or nothing
