i thought they were puffballs but... [ID]
    #1858282 - 08/28/03 07:57 AM (20 years, 7 months ago)

Hey, took a walk today hoping for some good mushroom hunting but there wasn't much out.
I did find what i thought were Scleroderma citrinum until i examined closer.

Weather: 20?c, been low-mid 20's all week, patchy rain
Habitat: leaf litter and rich soil, nearby a compost heap and wood chippings. under a mixture of trees.

they didnt appear to be mature specimens so i didnt take any home to spore print.
i assumed they were Scleroderma ********* until i uprooted one. it had a long stem buried under loose soil and a cap and veil. there was another specimen which had a piece missing and inside it appeared to have no gills.

see photos below

any help would be ace. i'm searching the net now for other possibilities and checking out some other photos of Scleroderma *********.

cheers, mike

that is interesting. i can't think of anything off the top of my head.
can you slice the mature one down the midle, from cap to stem and take a picture so i can see a cross section?

those sound interesting... stalked and with a veil, but no gills??

My first thought was that they could be 'secotioid' or 'sequestrate' mushrooms, which are species that have evolved from normal mushrooms, but have undergone selection pressure for spore retention mechanisms. To this end they have evolved reduced, often subterranean forms, with caps that do not fully open and gill tissue which is often eccentrically developed or reduced to a simple spore mass. I ruled out the true 'stalked puffball' group as they have much more dark, dry, fibrous, stems.

But now I'm thinking, no no no, maybe something's eaten the gills of the specimen you chose to photograph, and they are in fact just unopened Agaricus. The side profile photo looks like just one of those yellow-staining, slightly scaly-capped Agaricus species. Their caps often don't open until quite late. The profile, cap surface texture (i think the dark markings are mostly soil) and slight yellowing looks just right.

something related to this species maybe?:

more input needed...

So none of them had gills? They look kinda like young agaricus mushrooms where the veil hasn't broken yet.

Hey, i didnt have a chance to go back today, but i promise!

Agaricus xanthodermus is a good bet i think. the 'yellow staining' mushroom, shouldn't be too hard to id.

the only one i managed to examine was the second from bottom pic.
it had already been damaged and i could only manage a quick look. inside appeared to be 'foamy'.

the reason i assumed they were puffballs was because only the round cap is visible at the surface. it takes a good yank to remove them from the ground and i was surprised to find that it had a stem almost completely underground.

peace. mike
