Hahahaha. Saddam was never an economic mess. He starved his people so he could build a dozen palaces.

Something surprising about Saddam is the amount of trouble he went to in the early days to improve living standards in Iraq. The education and public health services in Iraq were the envy of the arab world.

If you can afford a solid-gold toilet then you can afford a bottle of anthrax

And what are you gonna do with your bottle of anthrax? Throw it at me? I'd be more scared of someone coming at me with a knife than a bottle of anthrax. 80% of people infected with anthrax don't even need medical treatment to recover.

Hussein's priority was personal power.

Can you name a leader of a country who'se priority wasn't personal power?

I won't argue with this; it's not unusual for the public to believe their president.

shakta said:
"Your accusations of his lieing have not been proven at all."

Are you saying there wasn't bogus WMD intelligence?  Or just that he didn't know it was bogus?

shakta said:
"Saddam represented a major threat to America. Maybe not on the day we attacked him, but in the future most definately. That is why we took him out before the threat was imminent. You kill a snake before it bites you, not afterwards."

Fair enough, but I would argue that if you live in the city, you don't need to exterminate all the snakes in the desert, even if one of them might possibly find it's way to the city someday.

shakta said:
"All you libbies love to claim that Bush said he was an imminent threat, but you have been proven wrong."

If Iraq wasn't an imminent threat, then why did we attack?  Oh, because it might bite someday.

shakta said:
"you did not address Clinton's action of not even going to the UN before Kosovo. We are a sovereign nation, and are ultimate alliance is to ourselves."

He shouldn't have done it.  How was this in our best interest?

Assuming all the intelligence was bogus, yes I think the President was unaware of it. I think he made the correct decision based on the information he had. Now there are reports that Iraq sent in fake defectors with bogus information. Saddam thought he would be OK as long as he kept the world divided on the issue. He, like Osama, was wrong.

As far as killing the snake goes, Saddam was the head of the snake. Getting rid of him will definately help in the war on terror.

Yes this was a preemptive war. Everyone new that, most now try to make it seem like the President said he was the looming threat when he didn't.

The war in Kosovo was not in OUR best interest. I do think he was correct to do it though. I think the US should be more active across the world when someone tries to slaughter an entire segment of their population.

Since when was Saddam involved in the war on terror? Him and Osama hated each other.

You can through that out all you want my friend. Saddam definately supported terrorist organizations. How about the $25,000 to the suicide bomber families? He was definately in the way of peace and democracy in the region.

That's a bit misleading shak, the real story is here:

http://www.casi.org.uk/discuss/2002/msg00495.html

The claim is generally correct, but is presented in what is likely a
deliberately misleading fashion. In fact, the Iraqi government claims to pay the families of all Palestinians killed in the intifada, the vast majority of whom are not suicide bombers. Lesser sums are paid to Palestinians wounded and to those who've had their houses demolished by the Israeli army.

BAGHDAD, March 11 (Reuters) - Iraq's Deputy Prime Minister Tareq Aziz said Iraq would grant $25,000 in cash to the family of each Palestinian killed in clashes with Israeli troops in the West Bank and Gaza.

"President Saddam Hussein has recently told head of the Palestinian
political office Farouq al-Kaddoumi his decision to raise the sum granted to each family of the martyrs of the Palestinian uprising to $25,000 instead of $10,000," Aziz said.

"It is a very simple contribution, which we consider as a modest one due to the circumstances of the sanctions," Aziz told Arab politicians and representatives of non-governmental organisations late on Sunday.

Iraq also grants $1,000 to each Palestinian wounded in the uprising and $5,000 to Palestinians whose homes were demolished by Israeli forces, he added.

$25k is a hell of a lot in that part of the world.

It's incentive for fence-sitter to blow themselves up, knowing that their families will be well taken care of in their absence. Considering that they have been married guys with kids lately, this is a big deal.

I thought Iraq was financially destitute? Seems like they had plenty to spare in 'foreign aid'. Too bad that money didn't didn't go to the poor starving orphans you claim we caused.

Nice post! Man it pisses me off when our media is dishonest.

Edit: I shouldn't say "dishonest". Most all news stories are truthful, but some have a wicked "spin" to them.

Let's all believe Tareq Aziz! It was definately a motivation to become a 'martyr', just as the bounty put on American soldiers was a reason to kill one.

Please tell me you don't believe this BS. Of course it was motivation for the bombers.

I believe it could have been motivation for the bombers. I just never heard the part about Iraq aiding fellow muslims who were killed by Israelis. Leaving out relevant information is a great way to spin a story.

Before you get too worked up about it, remember this is something Iraq "claimed" they were doing. Until you have a little more evidence they ever did actually pay a family of a suicide bomber and that it wasn't just Saddams propaganda I'd hold fire.

I agree. Whether it is true or not I don't know. Anything Aziz says should be considered a lie until proven otherwise. If Saddam did pay the others, he most likely did it only to cover his own ass.

It doesn't really matter now. He isn't going to be paying anyone anything for long, if he still is even.
