The Biggest Straw Log Ever.
    #1855534 - 08/27/03 06:20 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

this is a thoery i cooked up while driving around. its a tek for preparing a whole bail of straw at once.

turn your water heater up to 160 or 170
take one of those 50 gallon garbage cans and cut four 1/4 inch holes. in the bottom.

sanitise it.

lair the bottom with 2 inches of pebbles.(sanitised)

dump in your bail of straw, or half bail put the hose in the garbage can, and put the lid over it.

leave the water on for about 3 hours.

turn off water and stir in about3 cups of bleach. and cover.

the entire garbage can can be used to incubate once it has drained.

thats pretty much it, do yall think itll work?

Yeah man you should try it.
I know that my hot water tank would run out before 3 hours. As far as reliable n 'easy' goes i wouldnt bother to make holes or use bleach. Get a gas cooker or go primal and use a fire.
Watch out for the middle going anaerobic with bales that are too big.
Good luck

metabolism produces heat. the amount of heat generated within a given substrate is dependant on the rate of metabolism.

in other words, yes, heat will be generated as your mycellium feeds on the popcorn (or anything else).

Thats a hell of a log... Small scale production is usualy easier. Well, I should say compartmentalized mushroom growing seems to be a safe bet. Im one for jars, they are enough to get the job done, and if something goes wrong you dont have to cut the bitch apart. But hey, who am I to stand in your way?

The center of the can will go anaerobic on ya and it will rot. I've found 8-12 inch diameter logs work great, but with a 14" log it's hit or miss with getting an anaerobic core. Anything over 14" has rotted and produced nothing. If you want a giant straw log, build it 10-12 inches in diameter, and a mile long.
