Bundled package may be drugs - New Zealand
    #18546148 - 07/11/13 09:51 PM (10 years, 10 months ago)

http://www.stuff.co.nz/manawatu-standard/news/8910827/Bundled-package-may-be-drugs

A Woodville man got more chunks in his crunchy peanut butter than he bargained for after dipping his knife in and finding a suspicious bundle buried in the mix.

Marty Johnson was looking for something to go on his toast on Sunday morning when he pulled a jar of trusty peanut butter out of the cupboard.

When he opened the jar he discovered a wad of white powder wrapped in cling film had been jammed inside.

He called the police who took the powder away for testing to determine if it was an illegal substance.

The jar was among other condiments and foods Mr Johnson bought from a police and Customs auction he attended in Auckland last month.

He had not intended to buy the food items, but they were bundled with another lot he was interested in, and he couldn't get one without the other.

The jar, from a common New Zealand brand of crunchy peanut butter, had been sitting in the cupboard since he had come home from the auction.

On opening the jar, Mr Johnson said he found it "a bit odd" that the silver freshness seal had been pulled back part-way. The jar was "packed tight" with peanut butter , he said.

Thinking it looked a bit dry on top, he stuck a knife in to mix it up a bit.

That was when he came across the small bundle the jar was concealing.

"It was just a plastic bag wrapped in Glad Wrap, I undid it and found a sealed bag."

On closer inspection, it appeared the peanut butter had been scooped out of the jar and put back in with the package inside, he said.

Mr Johnson rewrapped the bundle, put it back in the jar and then called police.

He had yet to hear what it was, but his assumption was that it was some kind of drug. Mr Johnson had not opened the other condiments in the lot to see if they contained anything similar.

Detective Shane Brown, of Tararua CIB, said police would test the bundle with their drug testing kit, and if it gave a positive reading for illegal drugs, would look at sending it to Environmental Science and Research.

some people arnt interested in drugs, hence calling the police. Also if you didnt know much about drugs, a bag of white powder could seem more ominous than some coke, could be anthrax, or some chemicals or something. Not to mention, drug propaganda has some people scared of drugs like they were anthrax or something.

i dont understand this either, if they confiscated it in the first place, i wonder why they didnt check it out better, especially since the guy claims the seal wasnt fully sealed

Grrosssss!  This guy totally intended to eat this second-hand peanut butter with a broken freshness seal and looking dry on top.  :foreheadslap:
