Bottom casing layer...?
    #1854319 - 08/27/03 11:40 AM (13 years, 7 months ago)

I was wondering if it's really necessary to add a bottom casing layer? If I decide not to use a bottom layer, should I make any adjustments to the top layer? What works best for you?

Uhm, it's not necessary no. But it's still a good idea, because the bottom layer will provide a humidity buffer; when the mycelium is using up water in growth, the bottom layer can provide extra moisture to facilitate growth. When, on the other hand, the mycelium is soaked for some reason, the water can permeate into the bottom layer where it is relatively harmless.

No, not needed.

If you want to though, I'd say to use pure vermeculite that has been PC'ed, and only very slightly moist. Otherwise you just create some better living conditions for contams down there.

They say, that not using a bottom layer can give you the risk of over moisturising your mycelium, as the water cant run away, if it is excessive at the bottom.
What I do is make holes in the bottom of my container in which I have the casing. Underneath I put a towel. This is much cheaper than an extra layer verm.

I stopped using a bottom layer a while back and haven't noticed any difference in yields or potency. Just be careful not to overwater the casings; gently mist only.

Kool! I read something before similar to your method, Jazz. I might do something like that. Thanks
