Is there a way to password protect folders on a home computer running win XP pro? As in a little safe place to store pictures films ext? (of mushrooms, no really, mushrooms ) so as other computer users (kids) cant access them? Apart from password protecting your own login.
If not, there should be :-)

The easiest way I can think of is to compress and encrypt a folder with winzip.

I don't know if an XP version exists but when I was using 98se there was a program called magic folders which not only encrypted the contents but hid the folder. EDIT: Here ya go. Magic Folders

yes, it's possible with encrypting file system and NTFS's user/file permissions (aka ACLs). read these links: http://www.compulink.co.uk/~davedorn/computing/windows/xpencrypt1.htm http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/using/howto/security/encryptdata.asp http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_filesharing/07ntfs-permisions.htm

This is for Windows XP Pro...
To protect files in a zipped compressed folder with a password
Open My Computer, and then locate the compressed folder.
Double-click the compressed folder.
On the File menu, click Add a Password.
In the Password box, type a password.
In the Confirm Password box, type the password again.
Notes To open My Computer, double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
Passwords are case sensitive.
You can identify compressed folders by the zipper on the folder icon. When you extract an password protected file, the extracted file is no longer protected.
To create a zipped compressed folder
Open My Computer. Double-click a drive or folder.
On the File menu, point to New, and then click Compressed (zipped) Folder.
Type a name for the new folder, and then press ENTER.
Notes To open My Computer, double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
You can also create a zipped compressed folder by right-clicking the desktop, pointing to New, and then clicking Compressed (zipped) Folder.
You can identify compressed folders by the zipper on the folder icon. If you share compressed folders with users on other computer systems, you may want to limit the compressed folder names to eight characters with a .zip file name extension.

Just a quick thought... the encryption used in the older versions of pkzip was easily cracked. I haven't played with it since the mid 90's, but would assume that they didn't change much. Probably good enough to keep most kids from reading your stuff, but it isn't going to stop a determined party from getting your data.

password protected zip files are quick and easy, however they are notoriously insecure (google for cracking zip passwords)
encryption is built into the NTFS file system, might as well make usage of it as well as the granular file permissions that ntfs/ACLs allow.

Ah, i installed the other version, and no problems. Thought my computer is sticking on shut down, and not getting past the "windows is saving your data" screen :-( But this is part of my recent reformat i think, and not related.

Get pgp and you can encrypt a folder that gov can't bust without putting a keylogger on your unit.
