Pins only by walls of SGFC?
    #18539104 - 07/10/13 12:31 PM (10 years, 7 months ago)

Hello everyone!  This is my first post and while I took the time to read the rules and everything please forgive me if I made some kind of mistake.

I used the PF TEK to make my first 9 BRF cakes a while ago and up until now I have been able to solve all of my problems by searching through the threads on this site but this current problem has me a little worried.

On July 4th I put the 9 BRF cakes in a pretty large shotgun fruiting chamber in a small closet in my bedroom.  I have been spraying and fanning about 3 to 4 times a day with an old, empty, organic, all purpose spray bottle that I cleaned out before filling it with water.

The problem is that while all of the cakes are showing some results it's only the cakes closest to the walls of the SGFC that seem to be pinning.  In addition to this it looks like the only side of the cakes that are pinning are the sides that are hard to spray because they are facing the opposite direction that I'm spraying from.  I was wondering if maybe the spray is preventing my cakes from progressing in some way?  Or maybe there is some other problem?

I'm not sure if this will be helpful but here's some info on my setup.  My SGFC is typical, I tried to follow the directions the best that I could.  I drilled 1/4" holes 2" apart from each other on all 6 sides of the large plastic storage bin that I use for a SGFC.  It's a solid color so I cut a window on the lid and drilled holes in a sheet of plexi glass and taped it to the opening on the lid to rest the light on top of it.  There's two long planks of wood on the bottom of the SGFC that raises it about an inch or two off of the ground.  I put a 5 inch layer of fresh perlite in the SGFC after I soaked the perlite in clean tap water.  I rested the cakes in the SGFC on the lids of the jam jars that I used to colonize them in, which are placed on top of the perlite.  While I don't have a hydrometer or anything to measure humidity, it is extremely humid where I live right now and it's also very humid in my bedroom.  Water is collecting on the sides of the SGFC which seems to be normal from what I've read so far.  I dunked the cakes for about 16 to 17 hours before rolling them in a light layer of vermiculite and placing them in the SGFC.

I think that maybe I did not clean out the spray bottle well enough and maybe there was still some cleaner in the bottle that is possibly damaging the cakes?  I cleaned out the bottle with water like 11 times and was very thorough with rinsing out the spray pump and the bottle itself but its the only thing I can think of.  It really looks like things are stagnant in the area that is sprayed the most.  I bought a brand new spray bottle from my local hardware store which I am now currently using.  The only other thing I can think of is that maybe there isn't enough fresh air flow but I'm still not sure.

Now I know that its only been 5 days since they've been in there but if this problem continues I was wondering what I should do.  I was also wondering if anyone else could have possibly had the same problem?  I know a picture would probably help you guys out better and I can take one later but I'm at my GF's apartment right now and I probably wont be back until a day or two (room mate is taking care of spraying and fanning for now).  I can post a picture if the problem persists when I get back if that would help you guys.

I know that was a lot to read but I figured I would just try to give everyone as much information as I could.

TL;DR

Cakes are only pinning on the outside part, facing the walls of the SGFC.  What should I do?

Thank you very much!!!  After being a silent on-again off-again lurker of this website for about 2 years now I'm happy to finally get involved and join this awesome group!!!    :iloveyou:

You should follow the tek next time.

You don't put a shotgun terrarium in a small closet.

You don't use an opaque terrarium, you use a clear one.

Cutting a hole for light is counterproductive if it's straight up.  The light should be at about a 45 degree angle to one side for best performance.

No, it's not normal.

There should NEVER be condensation on the sides of a shotgun terrarium.  The small closet is impeding fresh air exchange.  Put the terrarium in an open room so natural air currents can do the job they're supposed to do.
