http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/sideshow/patient-awoke-doctors-errantly-preparing-remove-her-organs-141547610.html
The Sideshow Eric Pfeiffer, Yahoo! News 9 hours ago Not everyone looks forward to a visit to the doctor. And some people even have an irrational fear of hospitals.
But sometimes things do, in fact, go horribly wrong, as in the case of a Syracuse, New York, resident who awoke during a trip to the emergency room to find that doctors were mistakenly preparing to remove her organs.
The Post-Standard reports that in October 2009, Colleen S. Burns was taken to the emergency room at St. Joseph’s Hospital Center, suffering from a drug overdose. Although a nurse told doctors that Burns was recovering from her overdose, those same doctors pronounced her dead.
A call was placed to her family informing them that Burns had passed away, and the family subsequently agreed to have her removed from life support and gave the hospital clearance to harvest her organs.
But Burns was not dead. In fact, a number of signs clearly pointed to her being alive. When a nurse performed a mandatory reflex test on Burns, her toes curled downward. She appeared to be breathing independently of a hospital respirator, and her lips and tongue were said to have moved moments before doctors prepared to remove her organs.
Nonetheless, the nurse then followed instructions to give Burns a powerful sedative, a seemingly unnecessary move if the patient were actually dead.
Thankfully, Burns awoke moments before doctors were going to cut her open to remove the organs from her presumed-dead body.
"Despite this sequence of events," said a federal report from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, "intensive objective peer review and root cause analysis of the case was not done by the hospital's quality assurance program until prompted by the Department of Health."
"They were just kind of shocked themselves," Burns’ mother, Lucille Kuss, told the paper when asked how doctors responded to the morbid mistake. "It came as a surprise to them as well."
It’s unlikely that Burns’ case was entirely isolated. A report from the American Association for Justice claims that preventable medical errors are the sixth largest cause of death in the U.S.
The hospital was sanctioned for its actions and cited for a number of mistakes that placed the patient’s health in jeopardy. But in a development that is nearly as shocking as the mistakes themselves, the hospital was only fined a total of $22,000. Burns herself declined to sue the hospital after the incident even though the hospital, whose motto is "A Higher Level of Care," never even explained to her why the mistake had occurred.
Although the fines were levied in September 2012, they were first made public in a reported obtained by The Post-Standard on Sunday.
Burns, who fully recovered from her injuries at the time, committed suicide in 2011 at the age of 41. But her mother says Burns was already suffering from a number of issues and that the hospital incident did not play a role in her eventual suicide.
"She was so depressed that it really didn't make any difference to her," Kuss told the paper.
For its part, St. Joseph’s has stood by its medical staff.
"St. Joseph's goal is to provide the highest quality of care to every patient, every time," Howell said in an email to The Post-Standard. "These policies were followed in this case, which was complicated in terms of care and diagnosis," Howell said. "We've learned from this experience and have modified our policies to include the type of unusual circumstance presented in this case."
And as if all of that is not unsettling enough, one consumer advocate told The Post-Standard that there’s currently no way of accounting for how often these cases happen, because there is no centralized system for collecting information on hospital errors.
"These sorts of things do happen," Lisa McGiffert, director of Consumers Union Safe Patient Project, told the paper. "It's pretty disturbing."

I kind of find it hard to believe that the doctors didn't realize she was still alive when the nurses did. Maybe they really wanted those organs.... I'd like to think not.
I've been told by a nurse that she'd never be an organ donor, she said this kind of thing happens all too frequently.

Yeah it totally looks like they were willing to take her organs out, but the thing is, that would have killed her.

Doctors are idiots, they do not deserve their pay, and I do not want Obama Care paying them. Regulate the god damn economy already, no more "free market means a price can be whatever is charged, if someone is willing to pay it", regulate how much a doctor can be charged, and regulate it so it can be changed after a few years of doctors whining too much, that way people can afford their own health care.
Most doctors are imbeciles and I do not want tax money paying them. Doctors like these should be in jail

Well I am inclined to agree that some doctors make bad decisions and are a little out of touch with humanity. That said I am fairly certain if you needed medical attention that you would be singing a different tune. Why the hell would you bring politics in this anyway? Weak

CAN YOU TELL ME WHO DENIES SOMEONE MEDICAL ATTENTION?! I don't mean the best, but that you will die, and not get treatment.
Politics is weak? So if I can't bring up politics then I can't address roads, teachers, murder, water, doctors, war. Now I practically can't blink. I'll tell you the truth, I don't want Obama Care. I feel that the VA is about the same as Obama Care will be, I'd HATE TO BE A VETERAN and rely on the VA. I am just saying, I think costs of doctors should be regulated, if they aren't getting fired or arrested for shit like this. Sorry to bring up politics I guess I can't say "the speed limit should be lowered" if a drunk guy driving 85 mph kills someone and the speed limit is 85 mph I have to find a less weak way to address an issue

They probably think she is "less than" them 4 her drug use. Ironically they are happy ro harvest her organs like cattle, yet wuld refuse her a transplant due to drug use.

I'd like to see those doctors given life sentences for attempted murder. It seems like a clear cut case, they gave a supposedly dead woman a sedative, they knew she was alive. They tried to murder her. How many others have they murdered? They need skinned alive or sent to death row or a two hundred year sentence. They should not be in free society. Those docs are serial murderers. And just as bad as any mob hitter, and just like them they did it for the money.

The docs probably thought, "well she was trying to kill herself, it's what she wants so we might as well finish the job so we can harvest those organs."

cause they work double shifts and see double the number of patients they should be seeing. She prolly took a near-fatal dose of something like benzos, and looked pretty dead.
and uh... no doctor would think/do that... They got mortgages, and stress on their 10 year college investments too much.

This makes zero sense. Regulation will involve government and take tax money. If the market were truly free there would be cheaper doctors. Regulations made the mess. Regulating means government involvement, meaning tax dollars....

Stories of elective euthanasia have come from historic regimes, and abuses under our own system have escalated, incrementally, like a war of attrition, until the patient was being treated for a politically-incorrect condition, under a death panel administration.
I'm willing to consider that the doctors were (demographic or political) quota cases under pressure.
Even still, 1. Reflexes tested positive. 2. They chose to administer a strong sedative.
Those are two "errors," inconsistent with harvesting a vegetable, which result in a profitable outcome for their corporatist business model.
(Incidentally, if that was a free market, it could never have grown beyond the customer's ability to pay out of hand.)

Back in college I made a friend in some of my chemistry classes who was an ER nurse. I remember him telling me once that on his last shift they had harvested the organs of a nine year old girl. It was like he was telling me he had to file papers or had roast beef for lunch. No emotion, no concern, no sense of tragedy. But he was optimistic that someone else would live because she died. It honestly freaked me the fuck out.
Honestly, the "meh shit happens, too bad for you," attitude I've seen healthcare practitioners exhibit is what makes me the most afraid of receiving medical treatment. All doctors who deal with serious problems have made choices that kill people. It's intervention - they are intervening in a serious crisis, so I get it that some will die. But they don't seem particularly affected by it in the way I hope they would be. And if a nine year old little girl doesn't move them to go to great lengths, man oh man will I be fucked whenever I wind up depending on doctors to save my life.

The only weird thing about this case is that the woman woke up. Wow, who'd have thought?
Now those MDs that you think should go home every night and cry about the ruthless pointless suffering of humanity, those people are out saving lives still. And that woman, the one who woke up, she committed suicide because she is a worthless puke.
I am more inclined to say that it would have been better for her to have had her organs ripped from her sedated body, killing her, than that nonsense about doctors being killed and tortured over their mistake.
I'd even go so far as to say you two should be sedated and have your organs removed for donation, rather than meting out in humane justice like that to our most highly trained medical professionals.
Is it possible to pull your head out for a minute? You might like the smell of fresh reality
So you wish the woman who woke up would have been murdered instead?
Maybe if there weren't butchers running around slaughtering their patients in righteous delusion there would be more organ donors. Yeah, I'll advocate for people to cancel their organ donor status and to visit local hospitals and ensure that they are on a don't harvest list.
