ID assistance....
    #1852048 - 08/26/03 06:23 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

Hola,

While working in an orchard last week I found some rather large mushrooms that I have been trying to ID.  We don't usually see mushrooms of this size in summer where I am, so I am kind of curious as to wtf they are.  At first glance I thought russula, but it doesn't fit any of the species in the key from mushrooms demystified as far as I can tell.  I know russulas are tough to ID, but I also had a suspicion that it could be in another genus I'm unfamiliar with...  Any ideas?  It's not a candidate for eating or anything, just something I've never seen before...

Description
a. Habitat: Growing at the base of a cherry tree in central Washington state.  Possibly from the roots.
b. Characteristics of the gills:  White, decurrent
c. Measurements of cap and stem:  No ruler but the cap of the largest one was over 6" across.  Fat stem, ~3" thick.
d. Characteristics of the stem: Solid, white throughout with brownish scales on the base.
e. Characteristics of the cap:  Reddish-orange, somewhat wavy in age, the parts that weren't whitened by the sun had fibrils (wrong word maybe) similar to what I've seen on caps of Gymnopilus sp.  White flesh.
f. Spore print color: White
g. Color that the mushroom briuses:  No bruising apparent
h. Scent of mushroom:  Reminiscent of fresh oyster mushrooms but stronger, pseudo-sweet anise-like smell.

a pic of Coprinus something-or-other, just cause they look cool :smirk:

Some old Marasmius oreades, just because.  Never tried them but they're everywhere here.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

hrmm good call, it does fit the general clitocybe description better than russula, but I still couldn't get it keyed out to a species, oh well.  Thanks though

I can't tell from your photos - is there a ring on the stem?

They have interesting caps that suggest that they've dried out quite a bit. a good shot of the underside and stem would help a lot.

Without more info I'd be inclined to go with Clitocybe.

Happy mushrooming!

Nope, those brownish scales in the second pic go all the way around the stem, but theres no prominent ring.  The top of the cap was dry from the sun, but the outer edge, flesh and rest of the mushroom was still fresh.  I was surprised it was in such good condition actually, considering how dry/hot it is here.  They're pretty much rotted away now, so I can't get any more pics.  Thanks for the input, getting it down to a genus is good enough for this one  .  Never found/ID'd a clitocybe before...
