Anybody got paper based casing formulaes?
    #1852034 - 08/26/03 06:19 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

I'm looking for a good casing that's based upon the soft paper fiber sold as pet bedding such as Kaytee Soft Sorbent or Carefresh.

I'd even be interested in hearing about casings made with Goodmews newspaper based cat litter.... or any input on paper casings whatso ever.

RC

I haven't tried this, but it is on my list of things to test out...

Get some heavy paper and run it through a paper shredder to get nice long strips. Soak the strips in water for a few hours until they are soaked. Let the strips dry until they stop dripping and then use them as your casing. Using the heavier paper and the longer strips should cause the casing to 'light and fluffy' instead of plastered down.

I have tried something similiar to the above using soaked cardboard, but the I laid the strips down in a checkerboard pattern resulting in a substrate that couldn't breath... it didn't work out very well.

Why paper?....

There's a patent by Stoller 1978 where in an experiment a newsprint based casing out preformed a peat casing in yeild. The numbers were something like 1100g for paper with charcoal to 700g for sphagum peat.

Paper in the form of newsprint pellets, tufts of pulp and high temperature dried bits are all readily and cheaply availble as animal bedding or pet litter.

So I was curious if anyone had any first hand experience with paper.
