Galerina marginata

So I just read somewhere that Galerina marginata is saprobic and that it only grows off of dead trunks and fallen branches of conifers and very occasionally of deciduous trees. Is this correct? Or can Galerina marginata grow from woody conifer substrate?

Galerina marginata "autumnalis" can grow on any woody substrate, ive found a close species growing on the forest floor. http://mushroomobserver.org/116467?q=1KkaI

Gotcha. I'm pretty baffled by how similar they can appear. They're one edible I doubt I'll ever try.

Galerinas shouldnt be growing off anything but wood material but instead of ruling it out you should still use the normal IDing procedure for anything your not certain of.
If theres anything that doesnt have obvious blue bruising, Spore print it. The 2 spore colors are way different between the two.

And look at plenty of pictures of Galerina's so that you're not fooled by the greenish coloration on the stems that they sometimes/often exhibit. It has been mistaken by some users for bruising.

Hey, yeah I've heard about this. Also, do the commonly bruise any colors other than green? I know their print's rust brown. Also, what's the psilocybe containing mushroom that bruises green?? was it stuntzii? or shit I forget.

Ruca32 said: Amazing! Thanks so much! Yeah, you can really tell with the dark stems in this. Also this is so close to home awesome to see local pics cuz I've heard of mushrooms varying greatly due to factors such as weather, lat/long, etc. So thatk so much! Also, another galerina marginata question. Say you're walking in a grass field. Say like a horse pasture. And you find some mushrooms growing that look either like galerina marginata, or p. cyanescens. If you notice that there is no wood or wood chips what so ever in the field it's growing from, can you instantly rule out galerina marginata? Or can a mycealial mat grow deep underground and make the shrooms sprout up miles away from the host wood mulch?

yeah thats an example of ones from vermont
