WBS adjustment ~no pc necessary~
    #1851597 - 08/26/03 03:59 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

Ok here's a tried and proven way to use WBS.
It's very simple and is just a slight modification of 6t's tek!
First rinse your seed once or twice then put in a pot and add water till it covers the seed. Next put the pot on the stove on high heat and bring it to a boil. Yes thats right you boil the seed! Boil on high or medhi for 15 to 20 mins... You may need to add some more water if to much boils out. After you've boiled it for 15 or so mins dump into a strainer or colinder for proper draining
Next after it's been drained add some verm to the WBS about a third to 50% verm to seed...
You'l probably need to add a little bit of water after you mix em together. Or you can wet the verm bfore adding to the seed and you'll be good like that
Finall add a dry verm layer via pf style and put the lids on then cover with foil. To sterilize boil pf-method for 45to60mins.
Thats it very easy and your seed is able to be used without a pc
It works quite well, if skeptical you can experiment with 1 or 2 jars first just so you get the feel of it...

Can you do that in a myco-bag and sterilize boil it too or should it be pc'd. Or is pc'ing just better anyway and if so how long thanks.

So what would be the point of using WBS instead of BRF in this method? If you can't shake the jars, will it still colonize quicker than VBRF?

Ok, I can't help but look at this with skepticism from the get go. How does this differ from a traditional birdseed preparation, except with the addition of vermiculite? How will this result in a jar that does not need to be pressure cooked? It is still the same dirty seed as before, only diluted in vermiculite. While I see the vermiculite as a good idea if fruiting from a grain cake and can help absorb excess water, I fail to see how the simple addition of it to the jar would somehow allow your grain to be sterilized at nominal boiling temperatures.

I am sure it could be made to work especially if your seed is clean, it really will make no difference in the sterilization process. Anyone using grains should wash them well before prep anyway, and boiling is a common way of raising water content before pressure cooking (or steaming). I used to prepare birdseed without a pressure cooker (or at least I tried on many occasions). Even with fractional sterilization, failure was extremely common (without fractional sterilization failure was almost guaranteed with all grains I have tried). Almost more than any other grain prepared without a pressure cooker. Incidentally I have had more birdseed jars fail because of this than any other grain to date.

I figured I would share my thoughts and experiences because I have plenty of experience with grain failures in the early days without a PC. I was sick of BRF, and was set on getting seed to work. Other members may not have the same luck as you, and it could be due to a number of factors. I personally would not count on this based on my past experiences with birdseed of multiple brand names. It would be far too risky to just boil it for 45-60 minutes only once.

hey it works if you wanna call me a liar thats fine but it works well...
Just figured i'd share it cause some folks don't have pc's.
It works well and adding verm was just an idea to help with colonization.
I'm sure it could be done without adding the verm but, the verm is cool!

rinseing well and boiling before loading into jars should clean any grain up pretty good .
iv'e been doing about the same thing, except with a microwave and no verm.,with a contamination rate of less then 10% .
i've found with steam/boiling instead of pc you need to increase the drain time, so adding alil' verm is probably a good idea .

boiling is used just to get the seed to soak up the right amount of water.
ud still need to pc or something.
Also wouldnt adding verm to the WBS kill the ability to shake? which is why people use the stuff anyways.

boiling does work and using seed is for improved yeild or brf/verm as grains give better yeilds.
