Amateur Science
    #18512605 - 07/04/13 04:29 PM (10 years, 10 months ago)

I'm a long time lurker and I'm looking to get into mycology seriously. I was wondering what sort of contributions I could make as an amateur mycologist. Are there any unsolved problems in mycology? Is there anything that is needed such as more photographs of species either macro or microscopic?

Where would a good place to start be and what equipment should I get?

Thank you.

The field of Mycology is wide open. Some of the Peer reviewed journals I subscribe to have new mushrooms discovered in every issue.
There is little to no info on just what chemical processes the mushrooms employ to break down material and in many cases the enzymatic processes involved in a symbiotic relationship between many species and the trees they live under.
In all truth, we do not even know what (if any) antibiotics Ps. Cubensis produces that allow it to survive in cow dung.

Get beyond the basidiomycetes and into the other fungus that grows around us and even inside plants/animals and it is wide open for lots of new discoveries.

As to the place to start, start reading, taking courses, and digging. Pick something you want to know, a question you would like to answer and work towards that goal. It could be as simple as "What species of mushroom grow in my area" or as complex as breaking down various fungus and identifying the chemical processes they employ. Once you have a question and a goal, you can decide what equipment you need.

This is exactly the response I was hoping for! I very much interested in the chemical processes.

I noticed you have a photograph from a microscope as your avatar. What sorts of discoveries can be made with microscopes in the field of mycology?

That image is old, It is of Ps. Cubensis spores (Texas Goliad) and was made with a $20 usb ball cam taped to a film canister. lol

I am now using a commercial microscope camera that I got on E-bay and getting better pictures

If you are ID'ing wild mushrooms you have to have a microscope as that is required to ID most mushrooms.

Yeah, figure out how to easily cultivate black morels indoors and you will be a god among men.

That would certainly alter their market price I'm sure.

Much remains to be known about the range of many mushrooms.  If there's a database that will show species or genus ranges, doing forays and logging finds would be useful.  If there is not, making one and sending a link to it to all the various mycological societies would be hugely beneficial.

http://mushroomobserver.org/observer/intro Is a pretty good site for this sort of thing. Its not perfect of course, but you will find more than a few familiar shroomery names in the log books.

You can have it map out the locations reported for given species, submit things for identification, all that fun stuff. For example search for the giant puffball and you get this:
http://mushroomobserver.org/observer/map_observations?q=1LlvC

Looks to be most clustered in the great lakes area. Now this could actually be its favorite range, or it could just be where the most activity by amateur mycologists is, but its interesting info either way.

Thanks very much, matsc.  OP, lifted from the page he linked to:

"For those new to mycology, there is a huge amount of basic research that still needs to be done. By some estimates less that 5% of the world’s species of fungi are known to science. While things are slightly better for the large fleshy fungi known as mushrooms, it is still a common experience to come across a mushroom that cannot be easily identified in the available books or which doesn’t really fit the definition of any recognized species. This site is intended to address that gap by creating a place for us to talk about and record what we’ve found, as well as connect to the existing literature about mushrooms. Please do not feel intimidated by the scientific bent of the site. Everyone is welcome to dive in and add their own mushroom observations, upload mushroom photos and make comments on other people’s observations."
