Cool Mist leaking
    #1849928 - 08/26/03 12:00 AM (14 years, 3 months ago)

Has anyone ever had their Vicks Cool Mist leak from the sides? Mine never did it but I hear it can if the RH levels in the air are really high. It's been really hot here in the midwest and very humid. I still don't think this should happen, I don't think it's right, the cool mist is probably fucked.. but has anyone else experienced this?

I mean the water is coming out not super heavy but enough to get the carpet below it soaked in like a half hour with the cool mist running non stop.

Im thinking its sweat, nothing to worry about just place it in something if you don't want your carpet getting wet... asso you could try to insulate it.

It's always very humid here, but my cool mist doesn't always leak. Only when it's too full. Try operating it with less water.

If the air coming out of the coolmist doesn't expel fast enough (as if your pumping it into a fairly tight container) then it will try to come anywhere it can i.e. the sides of the coolmist. Put a hole in the side of your terrarium for the air to expel out of. This should solve it. If you already have this then I don't know.

I already have a hole in the terrerium.

The leaking is occurring because you are running it too long.

Per Anno, run for 10 minutes every two hours, with the exception of an 8 hour "off" period. (If you don't already have a digital timer to do this, you can purchase one for about $15 at Home Depot (where they have a much better selection than Lowes).

By running it at this rate you will also produce better specimens and not have to mist as frequently. And the unit won't leak any more too.

Nah, it happens right away after I turn it on. I run mine for 10 minutes every two hours as well.

I don't quite understand your logic about getting better specimens. Actually it doesn't really matter, the more you run it the more air exchange you're going to get while the RH will stay the same. That logic makes no sence whatsoever. The more time it has off the more you'd have to mist, not the opposite.

I think the problem is actually this.

The Cool Mist is old and the seal isn't real tight. I have the output going into one 5/8th's of an inch hose only.. so on the inside of the humidifier there's a lot of pressure trying to pump the output into that little hole.. so the pressure gets built up hard enough to expand out the sides through the cracks and forces water out with it.

I don't really know what to do about this except buy a new cool mist and make the hose size bigger. Or else make another hole to relieve some of the built up pressure.

Basically same as what I was saying. Try using sump pump tubing. Its about 1.5 inch diameter and very flexible. I use a plumbing fitting that has threads on one side, which I screw into the coolmist, and a tapered side which I push the sump tubing onto. Works well for me.

You can definitely solve this problem in a couple of ways. Drilling a 1/2" hole in the coolmist itself [top] will relieve the back pressure, though it will reduce the pressure coming out of the main tube. It will also start humidifying the immediate area, which may not be a good thing. Adding an additional tube to the terrarium will reduce the back pressure as well. Making the existing tube into one of a larger diameter will accomplish this as well.

If you remove all tubes and just let the coolmist run as ?nature? intended, you will notice NO leaking. The amount of leaking is a function of back pressure and [as you suspect] the quality of the seal.

One dude had a pretty cool solution, though it made cleaning of the unit difficult. He just epoxied the whole thing shut and installed an L-shaped tube that came out of the bottom pointing upward. By looking down into this tube he could see the water level which was even with the level in the reservoir. He added water [and peroxide] as needed into this tube. I don't know if it's a clear picture, but it solved the leakage problem.

Yeah I had another hole for another hose, what I did was just attach that hose into the same terrerium so now it has two hoses.

I never had this problem before, it has to be just because the thing is getting old and the seal isn't as tight anymore. Seems to be working good now though.

Eh, it's leaking again. What a pain in the ass. I might as well just go buy a new one.
