Flowhood Build-- blower HORSEPOWER RATINGS???

I'm getting stuff together to build a flowhood. I cannot handle pouring plates and doing transfers in a SAGB any more.
Found a decent source for a 24" x 24" x 6" HEPA filter, 99.99% efficiency at 0.3 micron. Static pressure 1"WG at 175cfm.
According to calculations, I'll need a blower that pushes at least 400cfm through the filter at 1.2" WG (allowing for pre-filter)
I have looked on Grainger and Drillspot. I have looked on craigslist and eBay. The only things in my price range are USED FURNACE BLOWERS rated in terms of HORSEPOWER and RPM.
----------------------------------------- Here's my question. How does Horsepower and RPM translate into CFM?? The blower I have my eye on is rated: - 1/5 HP - 1075 RPM (4 speed adjustable) - 115 V - Overall size: 18" x 10" x 16 1/2" -----------------------------------------
In searching thru Shroomerites' past flowhood builds, I found the info in Evilmushroom666's Flowhood build and faceyneck's Flowhood build to be very helpful.
IIRC, Evil used 1/3hp and Facey used 1/2hp 1075rpm furnace blowers, matched to 24" x 24" HEPA filters, with part of the blower intake blocked off, to achieve laminar flow.
----------------------------------------- If I don't block off the intake, would 1/5hp work okay for a 24" x 24" HEPA? -----------------------------------------
Wikipedia talks about horsepower as an approximate power standard but that doesn't tell me cfm. Been doing flowhood planning/research all night and my mind is ajumble. Please help me.

That is the same size blower that comes on the series 1 flowhood from fp, which is 12 X 24, half the size of yours.
I suspect you'll want to look for a 1/3 hp or larger blower. 1/2 hp is probably best. RR

I dont have an answer to your question but check this blower out....
Im planning on using that for a 12x24x6 HEPA and ive been thinkin that it might be a little bit too powerful but it might be perfect for a 24x24 hepa.

Thanks for the info. I can get a 1/2hp furnace blower MOTOR (used), and try to wire it to a blower assembly housing. Or, I just found a 1/2 hp furnace blower that's stated for GAS furnaces only. Is the whole "gas furnace only" thing going to be an issue? Sounds like a stupid question, because it does have a power cord on it but I want to be sure.
IAmYou, I have seen that blower you linked-- at 745cfm in free air, comparable blowers from Dayton drop to half that at 0.8"WG, so I think it's a no-go for me.

If it's a squirrel cage blower, it should work, but check it out for fit first. RR

Excellent, thank you! This project is looking alot better now
PinsWellWithOthers: Don't know how many cfm 2 horsepower is, but if a 2'x2' hood takes 1/2hp, yours sounds like more than enough for a LARGE flowhood

Yeah that's exactly the one I was talking about. Looks good, dont it? Price is right, too.
He says 1400cfm, but somehow I have a wary feeling about it.
If I could just see the thing and test it out, I'd feel better. Right now the only concrete evidence I have to go on, is Evilmushroom666 used a 1/3hp and faceyneck used 1/2hp, plus what RR just said... for a 24"x24" hood.
All of which seems to point to the fact taht 1/5hp might not do it.
If you're going for a smaller hood, this one's worth considering tho! If you do end up getting it, please PLEASE post the build and results!!

Also, as RR mentioned, the 1/5hp blower is what FP uses for a 12x24 hood.
So if I just went for a smaller hood that one would be perfect.
But being that I am clumsy sometimes, I think a larger hood will be more forgiving.

It's not just about HP. It's about the shape and contour of the blades. Some blowers are designed to move a lot of air, but not build static pressure. If you try to build static pressure, they just sit there and cavitate. Get the spec sheet from the manufacturer before spending much money. RR

Ive really been trying to decide if i want to go with this used sqrl cage or get that inline blower that facey used for $30 more, although i havent looked at shipping on the new one yet. Im kinda leaning towards the inline as of right now tho, bc of how the finished hood is more compact. Which space is a serious issue for me atm. Either way im gonna post the build when i get everything.
I was wondering about the "1400 cfm rating" too. If the cfm rating is accurate i would think its overkill, for my 24x12 that is. But like you were saying im not sure its right. Im thinking he prob made a guess at it and my gut tells me he would guess a little high vs low,ya know?
If you run across any great deals on either blowers or hepa's please shoot me a pm if its not too much to ask. Atm, facey's links seem to be the best deals i can find, new anyway.
