age of commercial cultures
    #1849170 - 08/25/03 07:30 PM (13 years, 11 months ago)

I really would like to expand my edible culture library; however, I am not all that intrigued buying cultures over the net. My first and foremost concern is senescene of my purchase. How old are the cell lines of cultures available on the net? Another major concern for me is having live culture sent through the mail being discovered by some naive ignorant postal worker.

How much contrast would exist between the isolate I buy and the isolate I create from germination?

That being said, where can I find spore prints from domesticated edibles?

Plus, I would prefer to create and keep my own isolate in my library rather than one from the net.

If you go through reputable companies you can be reasonably sure that your strain would not go senscent for a few years if you are storing it reasonably well. Cultures from reputable companies can be expensive. If you trade, the longevity depends as mush with the person you traded with as with you. Any isolate you buy is likely to be a single mono-genic isolate. If you get an isolate from germination it likely be polygenic. Not every thing you get from wild collecting or from trades will be good producers, but if you buy from a reputable company you will likely get something that is atleast moderately productive.

I am not really interested in domesticating a wild strain. I just want to find the best isolate for my substrate.

Thanks for the link. I've heard of him. I will probably buy a couple samples from him.

There is not alot difference between cloning a store bought mushroom and getting a print, growing and fruiting the progeny and cloning from that fruit. It will be difficult to say that you have an isolate until you clone from a fruit body.

I plan on finding numerous pure substrains. From there I want to induce volunteer primordia to appear. Strains that do will be heavily favored, strains that do not might very well be tossed. After that I want to test on a small scale the strains fruiting potential on spent shiitake blocks. The best strain will be selected and kept, inferior strains will be dealt with individually.

I was thinking about the farmers market. Produce an abundance of mushrooms for myself and family and sell the rest to recover costs.
