Sterilized coir question

The local hydro store has some presterilized coir that's a lot cheaper than most coir. Would this be suitable? What are the advantages and disadvantages of using sterilized coir of pasteruizing it? I figured it could be mixed with verm and then Damions elemntary coir tek could be followed.
Also, if anyone has any experience with outdoor monotubs, I'd reallyy appreciate any knowledge you might have to offer. =] -Thanks.

sterilized is not what you want. grab eco earth and pastureize it yourself

I'd like a TC to weigh in on this, but if you mix sterilized coir with something microbially rich like manure and then pasteurize, you shouldn't really have any problems. It's just spawning to a sterilized medium that can get you into trouble.

To my understanding if you're going to sterilize Coir and still use it it really serves no purpose. The point of the pasteurization is to allow the beneficial bacteria to live. By having Coir completely sterile there really isn't any point in using it.

I know I'm not a TC but I do believe during the pasteurization cycle the temperature will actually encourage the beneficial bacteria enough to colonize any sterilized parts. The pasteurization is not only to kill the bad but to colonize the good things homogeneously. Perhaps someone knows if that only applies to a little bit being sterilized(from touching the hottest parts if applicable) rather than a whole load of sterilized coir.

I know pasteurization is usually whats desired, but I that coir is very contam resistant, and that it may be just as resistant sterilized. I just wanted to take advantage of such a sweet deal on presterilized coir. Anyone have any other ideas on uses?

You could colonize it in sterile conditions. Colonized Grain -> Coir bag.

Most hydro store coir has trichoderma spores added.
Sterilized coir works OK. The heat seems to cook it, making the coir easier to digest by the mushroom mycelium. You're better off getting coir at a reptile or pet store to ensure there's no trich added. If you use the hydro store stuff, re-sterilize. RR

I might try sterilising instead of pasturising my coir. i seem to be having a hrad time getting it to colinise properly, yet my manure colinised just fine.
It does colinise, but its just not as thick as what manure colinises, and 1 of my tubs ended up contaminating with green mold i suspect though that i had a contaminated grain jar as my other coir tubs from the same pasturised batch of coir are fine.

RR, I'm pretty sure it does not have trichoderma added. It specifically says its sterilized as well, which is why I thought it may potentially be an upgrade from hot water pasteurized pet store coir.
Hey, RogerRabbit, could you offer me some advice on outdoor growing? Never had much success. I know you suggest using the ground, but what do you think of outdoor monotubs, at least until one is ready to take the full plunge to outdoor?
