Is it too late? papaver somniferum
    #18484739 - 06/28/13 05:12 PM (10 years, 9 months ago)

So for a bday present I was gifted some papaver somniferum seeds.  Would it be too late to plant these? (I'm in the midwest area)  Should I wait and sow my seeds in the fall or spring instead?

From reading I've been doing it looks like about three months from seed to flower. Kind of cutting it close.  So lets say September 28th would be flowering time.  Last year in my area, September 28th was a high of 68F and a low of 52F (with considerably warmer temperatures before that date)

I might just try it out, after all I'll still save some seeds for next year.

Around here it's definitely too late, but feel free to try. Mine are flowering now.

It mainly depends on the temps gotta be cool, too hot and they wont even sprout.

That explains why none of mine ever did anything, I had a few seeds germinate but they just stayed extremely tiny and then died after a while.

I see.  Around here it would likely be too hot then.  I know you can sprout them indoors but from what I read, going from indoors to outdoors has a tendency to stunt them.

From what I understand, it has to go through a cold spell in order to sprout. That is why they recommend planting them around fall time, so it goes through all that winter crap...

I am going to attempt mine in a couple weeks.
I've had my seeds in the fridge for a couple weeks and will plant them in some biodegradable pots, since they don't like transplanting.
I plan on putting the seeds in the pots and keeping them watered in the fridge for maybe a week or 2 before introducing them the heat outside.

From what I hear it needs that cold -> heat shock to germinate. Hell, it's worth a try.

Last year I just spread them around late spring and still got some sprouts. Not many considering how many seeds I put out but some nonetheless.

Try it!

I got a few in containers lookin stunted. Went out there earlier today and they were all wilted as fuck brought em inside hopefully they'll pull thru as long as I can get a pod of em. seems like the Tasmanian and Gigantheum are more tolerant then Hens and Chicks for sure.
