mycobags
    #1848166 - 08/25/03 11:47 AM (20 years, 7 months ago)

i ordered some mycobags and spores for my first attempt at growing shrooms, the spores are golden teachers. the bags and the spores were recieved on the same day and the bags were injected that night. since then it has been about 2 months and the bags are still not fully colonized. i made some rice cakes a few weeks ago and one is already colonized. the bags and the cakes are growing in a closet, i was just wondering whats taking the bags sooooooo long to grow

probly lack or air exchange or a low temp, ive also heard that the bags loose moisture quickly. you shouold just cut the bags open and case w/ verm in a tray of some kind.

If the bags are only colonized in one area (as opposed to being fairly evenly distributed) you might try breaking up the mycellium and spreading it around. You might also want to get the temperature as close to 84 degrees as you can.

Are there any unusual odors coming from the bag? There might be some kind of bacterial infection.

ok i broke it up, there were no unusuall order coming from the bags. does breaking up the mycellium stunt the growth or should it grow faster?

It will stunt the growth a little, but will allow it to grow in from more places so overall things should speed up.

mine started showing growth after 1 week, then I broke it all up and it was growing at the top again in 36 hours. So I broke it up again and will keep doing it until I look at some point and it's really colonized. I think that should work. Closet is pretty hot and humid.

if you decide to frui in the bag with golden teachers you will be waiting till next year to harvest, they are a slow colonizer and a slow fruiter anyway and the bag dosn help, they work great but they do lack a few of the need things for a decent size yeild. to fruit in the bag simply place it in a cooler area around 70-76 you can even cod shock them first for 12-24 hours in he fridge and the apply light, my golden teachers grew the fast under 6 on 16 off and 8 on 14 off. but i would suggest casing them. or atleast cutting the top of the bag and adding some verm and hnd misting daily. but its whatever you want to do, to fruit in the bag is simple an sterile and fun to watch but takes forever and the yeild is pretty small, about 14 dried grams is the most ie seen, but ten again i haven seen many, and also golden teachers are a robust strain and theres not enough room in the bag to allow for its full potential and beauty to show.
