how to lower humidity?
    #1848229 - 08/25/03 02:18 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

just noticed some pins on my first casing. hooray!!!! the case is sharing a rubber bin with a couple cakes, and the enviro is humidified with wet perlite. so do i need to lower the humidity for the casing, and if so how would i do that? i fan about 3-5 times per day and RH usually reads between 95% and 98%.
BTW, thanks so much ya'all. i couldnt have done this without your help. i think it's just fantastic that you give your time and energy to spread the knowledge and help newbies like me learn the joys of this hobby.

Make some good size holes in the terrarium....close some of them off if the humidity gets too low....adjust until you have reached the desired humidity.

i dont think that the humidity is too high for your casings, on my last casing attemp i tried lowering the humidty and all i got was deformed caps. its all up to you obviously what you're going to do but thought you might wanna know

thanks folks. since they are sharing the terrarium with cakes, i think i'll tell my buddy to leave the humidity where it's at and see what happens.

humidity for casing needs to be between 87-92. 95-98 is too high.

does cutting holes in the terrarium and covering with tyvek sound like it would work? maybe i'll have to make another terrarium and move the cakes.

I'm very interested in an answer to this as well. I've seen more trouble with high humidity than low. It's difficult to lower it without also exposing to potential contams... I guess the obvious way is to not use perlite, but is there an answer for those people who haven't set up a mist/air system yet?

Be well

lowering humidity can be harder than raising it. you could filter holes as said above, or increase air exchange, or just.... take out the perlite, dude.

100% is okay for pinning, but after they pin, get it down to 90%

omg...such an idiot. So, the person involved just took your advice got rid of the perlite and instead lightly misted the walls (which he knows he's read before...) and WHAM..instant 88-90 RH! It didn't seem possible.

Now it's just a matter of tracking the ups and downs to find the right schedule. Dang, thanks for making the obvious obvious...the guy will go crawl back into his cave now. THX.
