how long to see growth in casing
    #1847968 - 08/25/03 12:35 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

I just made my first casing. I broke the PF cake into pieces the size of quarters and spread them on a layer of verm/potting mix and barely covered them. I sprayed everything down thouroughly with h2o2 solution to prevent contams. I waited over night to see if i could see any growth (so that i could finish the top of the casing layer), but didnt notice anything. I went ahead and applied the rest of the casing layer anyway. How long is the longest uve had to wait to see growth after breaking up the cake?

Ok, ive waited 4 days now and still havent seen any growth in the casing. It just looks like a bunch of broken up pieces of PF cake covered in potting soil/verm. I didnt add lime, cuz i figured that since i was using a potting soil mix that they wouldnt neutralized the pH to a reasonable range. Its it normal not to see ANY growth at all for this long? Thanks

P A T I E N C E  my  friend

Typically wait around 7 days....are you keeping the casing in the right enviornements?

80*F - 86*F
DARK (no light)

Just wait, the more you look at it the longer it's going to take in your mind.

Why would it take 7 days for mycelium to START growing. From what ive seen it past, it should start growing the second you put it in the right environment.

Temp = 85-90
Completely dark

according to the 50/50+ casing tek, light isnt an issue. "I would recommend keeping the light off for the first week, but even leaving it on for 12/12 will not make that much difference."

My opinion is don't case cakes. I never had much luck casing them. If you want to case use grain. If your taking your time to mix up your brf+verm mixture you might as well birth them as what they are intended for. I know this doesn't help you but if it doesn't work don't worry about why and move on to grain. Its faster and better for casing.

Actually, no. If you shock the mycelium, it might stall growing. Cutting up cakes usually shocks the pycelium to some extent, as does dunkin them. It's normal that a couple of days, nothing happens, but after say, 4 days, it will start to grow again. And then it will have to grow through yuour casing layer before you can see it, no?

I had a *similar* experience.
What I have concluded is that the inner cakes were not full colonized.

So, I had to wait like 6 days before seeing any new growth. The interior were colonizing during that time.

Maybe it's your problem...

thanks, i was wondering if the mycelium takes a few days to recuperate and start growing again. Its been 3-4 days now, and i keep checking them, so hopefully ill start to see some growth soon. Im using Glad food storage containers, so i can see thru the sides of the container and see if they have started sprouting mycelium out of the sides.
I did everything according to the TEK's except that i didnt add lime to the casing mixture and i used a premade potting mix + vermiculite. Do u guys see any problem with this?
Im thinking about mixing up another batch of it just to test the pH. Tell me what u think.... Thanks,
~MC

Well nothing personal but that's just bad advise. Crumbling and casing cakes is the only way to grow using a BRF substrate, and it's much easier than growing on grains. Birthing the cakes and trying to grow mushrooms off of them directly just sucks.. you don't yeild any mushrooms at all. If you broke the cakes down into very small pieces in a bread loaf pan.. made an even layer and added an even casing layer over the top of it you'd triple your yields. It's really easy.

And yes it can take as long as 7 days, how deep was your casing layer? Did you get the moisture content just right?

Yes after you break up the cakes and case you need to let the mycelium come back together and re-establish itself just like it did when it grew inside of the jar, that's why you leave it in the dark for 4-7 days. When the mycelium breaks through the surface to about 25% then you birth the casing into the terrerium and add light 12 on 12 off. You do NOT want to add light to the casing prior to this time.

You people in here need to read a lot more, some of you are giving bad advise.

No, not always in 4. I'd say by the 8th or 9th day if you don't see any mycelium on the casing layer surface then you're in trouble. Other things can factor to slow growth like temps and moisture content in the layer.

I can see thru the sides of the casing container, and there is still NO growth on the individual pieces of cake (mycelium). This is the fourth day :-(.
These are the problems i had, tell me if theyre significant enough to halt growth so much:
1) Cake was overlayed a bit
2) Not sure of the pH
3) I sprayed everything with a h2o2 solution
4) Im using a premixed, potting soil + verm.

I smelled them just now and they are not contam'd (probably because of all the h2o2) Would it be worth opening them up, taking out the cakes, and re-casing them exactly as one of the TEK's says?
Annoyed and preturbed and impatient :-P,

So, i decided to try to recase the colonized mycelium.... I tested the pH of the substrate and it was around 8-9, which is way too high. This could be the reason for the absence of colonization... who knows. anyway, i took out all the pieces of colonized mycelium i could find and recased them in pure verm + H2O2 water. Im a lil worried about contams, but we'll see what happens i guess.

This is a pic of the salvaged mycelium from the old casing. This is after i sprayed it down with H2O2.

This is a pic of the mycelium on the bottom layer of verm.

And i cant upload a pic of the final casing due to rate limits... anyway.... if this doesnt work..... im giving up on casing
