Victorian Rainforest Fungi * 3
    #18478225 - 06/27/13 06:17 AM (10 years, 7 months ago)

It's about time I posted a thread, so here we go...

A few weeks ago I attended a fungi conference/foray in the cool temperate rainforest of Gippsland, Victoria. It was an amazing 4 days where I learned a huge amount and met some exceptionally knowledgeable and interesting people.

The forests were stunningly beautiful with just as beautiful and interesting fungi. It was a mixed forest of Eucalypts and Myrtle Beech (Nothofagus cunninghamii). The latter being a very interesting plant with even more interesting fungal associates.

The habitat:

I'll start with the stars of the show Mycena interrupta. I had wanted to find these for a long time and was excited to finally see them.

Next is another glamorous species, Mycena epipterygia

The pink colour and marginate gills make Mycena kurramulla distinctive mushroom

Nothofagus are a relic from the ancient past, where they once enjoyed a widespread distribution across Gondwana. When that landmass broke apart (some 100 million years ago) the area now known as Australia experienced a massive change in climate becoming hotter and drier. The Eucalypts took over as the dominant tree species and Nothofagus retreated to to remnant patches of temperate rainforest.

As you can imagine some of the mycorrhizal partners of Nothofagus are similarly ancient relics. This is true of some of the Cortinarius species formerly placed in Rozites and Cuphocybe, both of which were considered basal to Cortinarius before being merged into a broader concept of Cortinarius.

This former Cuphocybe could be Cortinarius phaeomyxa or one of the similar species (apparently there are 3 species in Australia this could be)

Next is Cortinarius metallicus (formerly Rozites metallica). The membranous annulus gives this away as a former Rozites. This specimen was past its prime and would normally be a metallic blue colour.

Another former Rozites is Cortinarius perfoetens (previously Rozites foetens). It has a very slimy cap with patches of a veil stuck around the edges. As the name suggests it has a disagreeable odour that I can best describe as resembling burnt rubber.

Staying with Nothofagus associates but moving away from Cortinarius is the giant Laccaria species known as Laccaria 'species A'.

To give a sense of scale here is one in my hand

Another group found a fungus that I was very excited to see. The rare Podohydnangium australe is an intermediate species between the truffle genus Hydnangium and the agaricoid Laccaria (though they both fall into a broader concept of Laccaria).

One more mushroom found under Nothofagus (but not a mycorrhizal partner) is the little red bleeder Mycena toyerlaricola (or more commonly called the 'Red Toyota Mycena')

Love the little bleeder.
Doesn't look like enough or nutritious enough to satisfy Drac's appetite though.

Interesting and beautiful, it looks very much like the New Zealand Southern Beech forests.

I think you will find that your Cortinarius perfoetens is conspecific with C. naphthalinus from NZ, in the future it will likely be amended to the latter because that is the earliest published name, here in NZ it is one of the rarer corts, you usually smell it before you see it, like naphthalene or moth balls.

I will confess something that should be quite obvious, CC.  I love mushrooms, i.e. fungi.  I really do.  I am talking about a strong feeling, i.e. emotion, for them.  I think they are beautiful.  I even dream of them.

Thanks for all the comments  Photography definitely isn't my forte but the species are too interesting for it to matter.

Thanks for the info. I have wondered how similar the Aus and NZ Nothofagus species are given their shared Gondwanan ancestry, though they've had millions of years to diversify. I'm captivated by the Southern Beech forests now. It's a shame they are so scarce in Victoria and a long way from where I live.

I so wanted to attend that conference, but cash and my health were against me this year.  And i will likely miss next years due to other plans.

Last year here in Tas it was a hoot, and so good to hang out with a bunch of fungi minded people, cetainly felt like home (except perhaps for the EGA crew!)

Those photos are awesome TimmiT, and if you ever end up here in Tas you'll have a ball, lots of Nothofagus forest here, let me know - I'd love to go on a foray with you.

Some more fungi as promised...

Ryvardenia campyla

Pleurotopsis longinqua

Deconica brunneoalbescens. The hygrophanous cap dries from the papilla outward resulting in a white nipple, giving this species it's name.

An Australian honey fungus, Armillaria luteobubalina

This Hypholoma species retained the vivid orange gill colour well into maturity

Even more vivid was this Hygrocybe cf. miniata. They were like little red beacons making them easy to spot from a distance.

This amazing slime mould covered a fern frond and shimmered in the light of an otherwise very dark gully.

It was a fantastic conference and I loved meeting so many mycophiles. I was surprised at how diverse a bunch of people they were. I've never been to Tas but desperately want to get there. I hoped to go last year but couldn't get the time off work. I will definitely let you know if I ever make it. Hopefully I can get to QLD next year but it's too far away to know where I'll be.

Now that you love the Beech forests you must come to New Zealand next season, you will not be disappointed, I was there a number of times this year and the last two times you could not walk through the forest without walking on fungi, "bursting with corts" to quote my mentor:cool:
