Arcade Machine Difficulties *PICS*
    #1847574 - 08/25/03 06:33 AM (13 years, 3 months ago)

Hey,
I know theres lots of people here lots more computer tech savvy than me so heres a question for anyone who can answer it. So last winter I got bored and installed a computer into an arcade cabinet. It was running an athlon xp1800 with a pretty nice heatsink and fan, 512 megs of pc2100 DDR ram, a 4.2g hard drive, 8x cd-rom, generic floppy drive, DOS 7, and windows 98 SE. Ok, so it ran fine until recently, its in a warmer environment now, AND i nabbed the stick of DDR out of it and stuck 2 128 meg sticks of pc133 in it (yes, this motherboard has slots for both). Now, when I play games through dos, it still works fine, but if I am in windows and start playing a fast paced game or doing something else that requires a little more processor power, it will lock up after about 5 minutes. Everything stops right where it is, complete with that annoying crap that happens where the sound freezes and wont shut up till you restart the damn thing. The CPU temp was 114 degrees F right after the restart. OK so.... i went into the bios and changed the FSB speed from 133 down to 100, It showed the voltage going up? But the processor is now running a couple hundred megahertz slower than its supposed to, and I'm assuming the ram is now running at 100 mhz as well BUT the thing hasn't locked up on me since. SO what are your guesses? It it getting too hot? Or is that generic pc133 ram is just happier running at 100%
OR could it be something completely different?

Thanks in advance!

ps, theres no fan installed in the cabinet anywhere to keep air circulating.

And now heres some images to give you a better idea of what I'm talkin about.

Ok.. so I kinda got bored on that last pic, but MAN!! You gotta love that game!!

Try taking out the ram and sticking it back in again, my system used to lock up and i found this helped me, iether that or it could be overheating, try and get a few 120mm fans inside to shift some air about inside. Maybe thatll help.

Thats a wicked setup btw, im dead jealous :P

Thanks Morbid,
Thats probably what I will do, I have a couple of old case fans lying around. Looks like its time to drill some big holes.

I'm extremely jealous of you   However, it wouldn't be a bad idea to get some air circulating through there..

If it happens to be an ecs k7s5a motherboard, they're well known for issues with sdram... :P

WOAH!! How'd ya know!?!? Thats impressive and spooky at the same time!! It is infact a k7s5a. I got it and the processor as a combo deal on ebay a while back. So they have issues with sdram in general huh? Time to get some more ddr I spose.

Thanks Everyone!
