important (to someone else) dunking question
    #1846920 - 08/24/03 10:35 PM (20 years, 7 months ago)

my brother's best friend's second cousin's former college roommate (my best friend) is trying his hand at growing a couple cakes but is wondering if he can safely dunk a slow-to-pin cake that already has a number of hyphal knots on it.

the strain is golden teacher, he is not very experienced with growing, and asked me to ask all of you if it's likely that hyphal knots would appear but not turn into pins for a long while, and if dunking would be bad for it. his (slightly undereducated) theory is the cake may be a bit underhydrated. he's tried raising the humidity and is fanning plenty, but its not helping much. its a PF cake with millet flour rather than brf....not a casing. it's had knots for around five days or so at least now. should i just tell him to hold his friggin horses and be patient?

the hyphal knots will survive the dunk...some strains are just slow fruiters...

hmm...i'm guessing that the cakes are freshly birthed right...usually i dunk before birth...if hyphal knots are forming there must be enough water in the cake for it to fruit...i say just let it finish this flush and then dunk...and after you dunk...just watch the cake explode with pins...don't forget to double end case and roll in dry verm too...

does he need to sterilize the verm before rolling, or would it basically be fine because it lacks nutrients for contams to grow on?

oh, and there is a good bit of lighting from normal room lamps, but also sunlight from the windows. i ask him not to overkill on the lighting...the windows face the east, so there isn't a lot of sunlight during the hot parts of the day...not sure if thats important or not...

said friend realises more and more how little he knows about cultivation, whether or not he knows more than the average joe on the street...

sterilization is always a plus...although a friend has used verm fresh from the bag and hasn't gotten any contamination yet...

ok...how long is the dark cycle? a 12 hour light/dark cycle is ideal...

Dunking is amazing. I took a cake after it's first flush, dunked it 12 hours outdoors (in two tupperware containers) overnight in the cold. After an added 8 hours in the back of my toilet, I rolled it in pasteurized verm and put it back in the pod. It has so far sprung up 11 healthy, maturing fruits. I'm more than thrilled, this being my first experience.

I seem to be getting a lot of fat asses. What can I do? The sides of the pod are naturally dark coloured. There are two small light windows at the top. The perlite of course is white. Humidity is higher than is necessary, but I've been told there is no need to toy with humidity levels when it comes to cakes.

I do not have a refrigerator.

finally a proper pin!! too bad there's a tiny bit of mold on a bit of the cake...but a sterilized scalpel and prayer will take care of that. wish him luck, he's uber excited!

ack, turned out said speck of suspected mold was a small, dark piece of verm with myc growing over it, so it was barely visible and had a fuzzy appearance...no worries now :P

yep, and now a largish hyphal knot next to said pin also is showing a bit of orange/red-brown at the tip. not that they're large pins on the verge of being mature specimens or anything, still very tiny, but you can tell there is a different color on what will be the cap. should the first be mature by friday at least?? i hope!

also, i always hear you're supposed to harvest the entire flush at once. but if you have mushrooms still growing, couldn't you pick the ideal shrooms one day and wait a bit for the others (that haven't aborted) to catch up and learn to be better shrooms? my friend might just do that if there's no problem with that...he doesn't really want one or two big, beautiful shrooms with the veils just broken or about to be and a lot of tiny shrooms, he'd prefer a lot of shrooms all about the ideal size...later on he'll be concerned more with potency, now he is concerned more with yield...so long as they aren't dropping their spores everywhere, he wants them big as possible  it would seem a bunch of big moderately potent mushrooms would get us more trips than a bunch of highly potent but very small mushrooms...are they really that much stronger?

the one time my grandmother grew some before all this, she neglected them while she went on vacation and came home to find about 3 servings almost all overly matured with TONS of spore dump...she cried about it and gave them to me...i still found them much better than the dried up nasty shrooms i'd bought from a dealer before....is it really worth it to keep them so small?

you can harvest the ideal shrooms and leave the rest to continue growing...just as long as they're not connected to the mushroom you're picking...alternatively you can cut the cap off the mature shroom so that the mycelium at the base won't get damaged and surrounding pins won't get hurt...don't worry about the stem rotting...the others should catch up in a couple of days and the stem shouldn't rot in that time...harvest the mushrooms just as the veils begin to break...the mushroom doesn't grow much after the veil starts to break...as for potency...it's all relative...3g of full grown mushrooms will have the same effect as 3g of aborts and pins...obviously you'd need to eat like 40 pins or aborts to get the effect of like 7 full grown mushrooms...just harvest them when the veils break...they're size will depend on their genetics and the conditions they're growing in...

if all goes well, could i expect my friend to have a first harvest by the weekend? or is it more likely like next tuesday?
