Flow Hood Speed

I just put together a flow hood today (so excited) and I'm afraid the fan I'm using is too strong. How can I tell? I don't want to damage the filter by continuing to use it. It immediately extinguishes a lighters flame and actually provides quite a breeze.

That's way too high. You want about 100 CFM coming out of your filter. It should bend a lighter 90 degrees and not put it out.

Alright well I guess too high is better than too low. I'll need to find a way to regulate the speed. thanks. I won't run it until I tone it down. I researched the fan and it should put out 100 CFM at the static pressure of my filter so not sure why it's so strong.

You don't want 100 cfm, you want 100 fpm. The lighter should bend 45 to 60 degrees, but not flicker or go out. Block off part of the intake or get a smaller blower. RR

Yeah, this. I've only helped build one flowhood, and I didn't do the math.

Alright I made a pre filter using layers of cheese cloth and now it bends the lighter at a 45 degree angle. I want to use the smoke test and a bottle to see if flow is laminar but don't like the idea of smoke being sucked into my flow hood. I might just do a bunch of agar plates, leave em open under the stream of air and see if they contam.

That's a poor way to test. Don't leave petri dishes open for more than a few seconds, flow hood or not. Use a smoke test if you want to know if air is being drawn into the work area from around the edges. RR

Thanks RR. Sorry for posting such a noob question I'm really trying to step things up. I see some defects in my filter which I got from fungi perfecti. The metal bits aren't all shaped the same. I will do the smoke test and post a pic of my hood (which I'm proud of). Thanks again. I hope to contribute to this forum through my agar work/ liquid culture/ strain crosses etc.
edit: I was going to start my p. tampanensis spores on agar tomorrow but I just did the smoke test with some incense and if I hold the incense by the edge of the filter the smoke flows into the stream of air from the HEPA. Guess I fucked up...

I just realized smoke gets sucked into the stream but as soon as it's in front of the filter it just travels straight. So I think if I work in the middle of the filter I'll be okay as the smoke wasn't tumbling or mixing or anything. Going to test it today with some spores
