Got robbed... should I fill out a police report?

Long story short, I left an extra key to my apartment under the mat, and apparently a thief found it. Several times this month I've noticed that things weren't quite the way that I left them, but I brushed it off as my own paranoia or maybe my Dad stopping by (he has a key).
Yesterday they struck; they came in and took my phone. I left it on my kitchen table and went out for an hour. Came back, the locks were wrong, and the phone was gone. My carrier did a geolocation and found out that it was located in the back of a mexican restaurant.
So, should I fill out a police report? Part of me says yes, because I got robbed, and because it might help to prevent another incident. Another part says no, because they might smell something that they don't like, I don't think that they'll find the phone anyway, and I don't really have any solid evidence; maybe I did just drop it--although I'm almost certain that someone's been coming into the place. In addition, they have bigger fish to fry... they just came through looking for a stolen car.
I asked a bunch of neighbors to keep an eye out, saying that I "lost" my phone, and maybe dropped it outside. I asked them, if "found," to drop it in my mailbox. I suspect some of them... I live next to some big sorta sketch apartment buildings. I actually went to the two restaurants (where my phone was located within 30 yards) and left my number, saying that I might have dropped my phone in the parking lot. Let the fucker who took it know that I know where he works.
Today, I changed all the locks and plan to get some lights and maybe a security camera.
As disheartening as a theft is, I consider myself pretty lucky, actually. My laptops and some other stuff were lying about in plain view; that could have easily walked as well. For a $200 phone I'm glad to have found out about this.
Right now I'm working on option C: getting the fuck out of here and finding a better neighborhood.
*sigh* thanks for listening, Shroomerites.

No. I'd advise you to leave a poison cake on your table with your new phone though. Nothing that would kill them, just give them flu symptoms for a few days and maybe keel over.

Your title is misleading. That isn't robbery at all. It's burglary and larceny.
In addition, I suspect that no one went in your place at all. This sounds like paranoia.
Leaving a key under the mat is just stupid, though.

The cops won't do shit. Don't go near them unless you have to, I always say. just change your locks and stop leaving a key outside your door. Go to the restaurant, ask if someone turned in your phone, and if not notify your carrier. If your laptops and shit are still there, you are lucky or didn't get robbed.

Words have meaning. Robbery indicates that the OP was personally there and subjected to force or the threat of force. That's very different from what happened here.
It's like saying you were raped when someone came into your house and masturbated on your pillow. Crimes against a person are far worse than crimes against property.

Me thinks it could be a targetted robbery, with the intention of getting your phone. Why would they leave everything else, laptops, etc.. that were laying in plain view?

After some thought, I think that I figured out what happened.
The day before the burglary, I remembered a sketchy looking guy hanging out on my front step with his kids. One of his kids started fiddling with the lock. It caught my attention, and I barked out, "HELLO?!" He sharply said to the kid, "DON'T DO THAT." At the time I thought that it was weird, but shrugged it off.
The next day the phone was gone, and this incident kept coming to mind. First of all, why was he sitting on my front step in the first place? They're not that comfortabIe, and rarely does anyone sit there. Why was the kid fiddling with my door? Maybe they thought that I was out, and were trying to get in?
Methinks that his M.O. was to open the door and send a kid upstairs while he kept a lookout. Every kid knows that a phone is valuable; he grabbed it, and hustled out with his prize.

You should have borrowed a friends phone and brought it with you to the restaurant and then proceeded to call your phone and looked for the ring/vibrate or watch for someone silencing their phone at the same time you were dialing.

I did that... but nothing. I usually kept the phone on vibrate so as not to disturb anyone when it rang.
On the odd chance that I did have the ringer on, I called it about ten times while I was looking for it, so I'm sure that the thief was smart enough to turn it down.

android have a nice lil free app, find my droid. Makes it ring off its nut even when off and or silenced.
Sim card lock pin (not a sim pin, this enab;les evrytime a new sim is inserted it needz that code to boot it up, also keypad lock pin helps. Pain in arse sometimes butcan be areal benefit of phone being left alone/ useless to the thief.
Have u got the imei number, call ya provider and get them to lock out the imei numbered phone.

Uggh all phones have a recovery option.. like on my galaxy s3 just hold volume up + power + home button to reboot phone and accesa recovery to fully reformat phone...
Even computers only require a cracked torrent of windows to bypass a password..
