Rupert Sheldrake needs to get his PhD revoked. * 2
    #18460448 - 06/23/13 11:00 AM (10 years, 9 months ago)

His book 'Dogs that know when their owners are coming home' has been discredited. His testing was loose and shoddy and partially based on innuendo, assumption and anecdote. Unsurprisingly, not a single degreed animal behaviorist has been able to duplicate his results.

Sheldrake has no limit of unfounded beliefs. One of them is that a person can tell when being stared at. this does not take years of study and conjecture. It can be done with a simple test - and of course, he turned down Randi's million dollar offer to prove this simple premise.

Why would he not take it? No government agents would take him away for proving an ability he claims that we all possess. No, the reason is because on some level he realizes he is a fraud out to sell magical-thinking books and nothing more.

How does one get their PhD revoked?

One doesn't, but selling horseshit and pretending it is science is a crime in my worldview.

Don't other scientists critique his work and make it illegitimate by doing so?

Sure, but his audience is NOT the scientific community, but spiritualists, paranormalists and others clinging to fantasy.

If you do a search, I have written many posts/threads tearing this idiot (in the scientific sense, not the business sense - he certainly knows how to play his audience) down.

I love this photo of him during his promotion tour of 'Ageless Body; Timeless Mind'.

Sorry, I don't debate by video for a myriad of reasons. Why not quote his greatest point and we can discuss its merits?

I hope I am not out of topic by adding this list of scientists whose PhD should be revoked, and definitely address an audience of individuals clinging to fantasy :

I wonder how they got a PhD in the first place ?

In a thread I did years ago, I asked why nutters are so proud of their nuttiness. At least we get now get a partial list of irrational scientists all in one place.

I like how the one teacher put "science" in quotes. Anyone educated in English at that level should realize that one does not put such a word in quotes when it is using the commonly-accepted meaning of the word. (Scare quotes are quotation marks placed around a word or phrase to imply that it may not signify its apparent meaning or that it is not necessarily the way the word is normally used.)

To paraphrase Diploid, this teacher should slap herself.

"I believe in a global flood because the Bible said so." I would be embarrassed to be college-educated and still be so stoopid. These people revel in ignorance like a pig in mud.

Worldwide Flood Precipitation

The conventional flood story states that the flood waters came from rain that lasted 40 days and 40 nights.[2][3] Rain appears when the air can no longer support water in the vapor phase and it becomes saturated. Normally, the atmosphere is on the brink of saturation, and the variations in temperature and pressure caused by weather fronts are capable of altering the threshold at which precipitation will form quite easily. What about the amount of water vapor suspended in air needed for the 4.5 billion cubic kilometers of water needed for the global flood? The water vapor currently in the air is only around 2-3% on average, with a maximum of 4% limited by temperature and pressure.[4] The change in atmospheric conditions required to support enough vapor for 112 million cubic kilometers of rain per day - about 120,000 times more than the current daily rainfall worldwide[5] - would have rendered the air unbreathable.

Indeed, the atmosphere really couldn't sustain that much water even under the most extreme temperature and pressure conditions the planet can produce. If the conditions were right for that much water to be in the atmosphere, humans and virtually every other animal would have drowned through the simple act of breathing, as well as turning the earth into the equivalent of a pressure cooker with atmospheric pressure at nearly a thousand psi instead of the standard 14.7 or so that we have today. Barring the goddidit escape hatch (a tried and tested fallback for creationists everywhere), this is impossible.

A dog could know when its owner was coming home for all number of non-psychic reasons, i.e. conditioning, telling time by sun position/shadow length, the guy down the road coming home (as he always does 5 mins before the dog owner) etc.

It's almost as if he devised an experiment with the most plausible (yet still false) result for psychic powers.

More evidence of brain damage with your pre-whining. Not a single paranormalist has passed the pretest.

All skeptic groups worldwide + members Diploid + Swami are all in on the conspiracy? (Paranoid much?)

All scientific/pyschology magazines & organizations worldwide have rejected the 'being stared at effect' proposed by Sheldrake because:

1. His protocol was sloppy as fuck and could not be replicated.

2. 'They' are also in on this amazing conspiracy.

I guess I had my memory erased as I have no recollection of attending such meanings nor signing an oath of silence.

Instead of writing 1,000 posts this could be proven in 30 minutes by anyone anywhere in the world. Is Rand all powerful and capable of supressing the actions of 7 billion people? Can he stop people from replicating Sheldrake's flawed experiments?

Have you ever thought of seeking professional help? You certainly exhibit classic symptoms.
