Can I store a straw log on an open shelve while the mycelium is colonizing? Will the straw log loose its humidity content like this?Should it be kept in a fruiting chamber instead?

While the straw log is colonizing it can stay anyware at room temp of about 65-85f,higher temps mean more contam issues.as long as the gas exchange on the log is covered by paper tape(ie: the needle holes u poked on the sides or a gooseneck collar with polyfill) you should be good on the shelf,or if you used lime with the pasteurize water then you won't have to use any paper tape or polyfill on the logs because with the wild ph swing no contams should colonize before the mycelium takes hold and produces anti-contam properties! So on logs I usually always have lime treated pasteurize water, and also no to teach bad things but when I poke the needle holes on the side of the logg that is usually good enough for me I don't usually cover the track marks down the sides of the logs with paper tape, but I here good things about it. Usually the mycelium is at 100%with in two weeks and if it doesntnlook close to done I usually throw it out in compost it and make more. But ya any ware that's room temp is usually good for colonization, fruiting on the other hand is different!
Humidity during colonization, is taken care by u filling the straw to field capacity before packing,as long as there are not too many huge gaping wholes the log will colonize well,,usually I only use needle holes until full colonization then I either birth or use a arrow tip w razor blades to open whole for fruits every3-4 inches apart( some people use the arrow head from the beginning ,but I like the needle seems less contam prone
Remember I'm no pro ,just my 2 cents
Also remember your logs are only as clean as your environment,if u are making them in barn/woodshop with lots of dust and stuff expect contams but if ur in a clean environment and take good precautions u should be good:) Logs are very hardy usually depending on strain ,but they are defiantly a great tek
