I suspect there is more myth and hype to this than fact. Aspirin can cause liver damage as well. Moderation is the key. I suspect you would have to do an astonishing amount of shrooms on a extremely consistent basis to do any real or (even less likely) permanent damage.

Mushrooms do not cause liver damage, at least not if taken in any reasonable dose. It's a myth. Mushrooms are, physiologically, one of the safest drugs you'll ever find, actually.

psilocybian mushroooms are not exceptionally hepatoxic... of course, some other mushrooms (some of the amanitas & some boletus & no doubt a few other genera as well) have some wicked toxins in 'em... & 'most all mushrooms (even storebought Agaricus bisporus) have traces of some sorta hydrazine derivative... ~ "dose, dose makes the poison" (attributed to phillipus aureolus (1493-1541), a.k.a. theophrastus bombastus von hohenheim, a.k.a. paracelsus; mystic, allopathic phsyician, alchemist, distiller, mercury-eater ...)

I'd say psilocybian mushrooms cause about as much liver damage as button mushrooms ie. none whatsoever

I think there could be a strong possibility of bad liver damage. Think about it: it's a toxin, its stronger than alcohol and you piss it out mighty quick. I'd like to see a picture of someone who has been doing shrooms for ten years plus on a fairly regular basis, maybe a pic of someone who has been at it for 30 years too. Because I know I can tell what drinking does to someone after ten, twenty years. I know this is isnt very scientific, but liver damage is liver damage and you might as well do a 'comparative study' if there is an absence of hardcore facts.

Everything on earth is a toxin. Water is a toxin if you drink over 3 liters of it.
Mushrooms might become toxic if you ate 10-20 pounds of them a day for several months. Otherwise I'd forget about it. At dosages of less than 5 grams the toxicity is pretty much zero.

This is just plain untrue. There is no data to indicate Psilocybin mushrooms do ANY damage to the liver. Its actually quite the contrary, people have done mushrooms regularly for a lifetime with no liver damage whatsoever(Maria Sabina is a good example) Theres never EVER been a case study of liver dmamge or any kind of liver disease from psilocybin/psilocin in anyone who has ever taken psilocybin mushrooms ever period. This is a myth that comes from many other mushrooms that can damage the liver maybe being eaten with(a bad identification) some psilocybes, or from some of the more popular poison mushrooms. Id be more worried about my liver taking aspirin for a hangover than eating some proven harmless to the liver psilocybes. Stop the myths!

Good point, Maria took them very regularly from being a young child. She lived till she was around 90 years old.
A single pint of beer is going to do a helluva lot more damage to your liver than a dose of mushrooms.

Actually, a pint of beer won't do anything in the way of damage. Two servings of alcohol a day is actually good for you.

1 serving == 1 pint of beer == one glass of wine == one oz of 80 proof vodka.

There are mushrooms that will cause liver damage if eaten. They contain toxins called amatoxins. The mushrooms which contain these toxins are mostly from the genera Amanita, Galerina, Lepiota, and Conocybe. Amatoxin poisoning is responsible for over 95% of mushroom poisoning fatalities. Death is usually in 7 to 10 days due to liver failure.
The mushrooms that contain psilocybin and psilocin will not cause liver damage.
The cases related to psilocybin containing mushrooms causing liver damage are cases where somebody misidentified one of the deadly mushrooms mentioned above for one of the psilocybin containing species. The most common mushroom for this is Galerina marginalis. Sometimes the deadly Galerinas are mixed in with active Psilocybe or Panaeolus species. mjshroomer has posted photographs of the deadly and active mushrooms growing side by side.
Happy mushrooming!

Just find a pic of MJ man, he's fine. I've met plenty of people who have been tripping since the 70's over the summer, I never met one who claimed to have been doing it since the 60's but I met successful engineers at Red Rocks Amphitheatre who were gobbling them up before going into the show. Not one person I met complained of any negative effects and none where glowing yellow from liver damage.
