Flow hood question
    #18455254 - 06/22/13 08:09 AM (11 years, 6 months ago)

Hello all, I have recently been looking into the prospect of building my own flow hood and I think I've found the compatible blower/filter combo I'm interested in.  I was just making this thread to get others' opinions on whether this combination will produce enough running CFM's or not.  I'm pretty sure that it will do, but I always like confirmation from people who really know what they speak of.

18 x 24 x 5-7/8  99.99% HEPA

and this blower:

http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/DAYTON-PSC-Blower-1TDT2?

Is that an appropriate combination to achieve at least 100 ~ 150 fpm air speed?

Also is there any generically accepted size of plenum/box for that combination aside from just creating the box to fit the dimensions of the filter and blower in working order.

Thanks in advance for any response and feedback/opinions.

And if there is a dedicated forum for technical aspects such as this,  I'm sorry I missed it.

Yes or no would suffice.

I think that blower could fall a bit short for you.
Your filter has 3 sq ft of area, and you want 100-120ish CFM per sq ft AFTER the resistance of the filter, so ~300-350CFM post-filters.
The fan doesn't list past .8 resistance value, and your filter probably has a resistance value of 1, and it's important to remember your prefilter.
Following the CFM reduction curve at different values with sortof a predictive guess, looks like you'll end up with under 300CFM post-filter.

That said, my first "flow cab" I built was a bit under-powered by it's fan due to the type of fan it was, and I still used it for a year anyway with the same success rate I'd hope to have from a proper one.

However for you it's not too late to pick up a more powerful blower.
It's an acceptable rule-of-thumb to figure out your blower needs with a resistance factor of 1.2 (WG)
You should play around with the math equations for such things and see what happens. You'll find them, or similar answers to your exact question, by doing a search.
But if your blower is too powerful, it's little problem to block off part of the air intake or use another or thicker prefilter to adjust. So aim for the correct power or slightly higher.
