anything wrong here? (pictars)
    #1845501 - 08/24/03 03:44 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

Everything seems to be looking alright to me, but since this is my bro's first time casing he's a bit nervous. Anyway I took a picture of the casings and the fruiting chamber:

Anyway, they've been getting between 8 and 12 hours of indirect sunlight a day, fanned two or three times a day... it hasn't been misted in a couple days because I'm afraid it'd screw up the growing mushrooms. Anything wrong here I'm missing? Anything that could stand improvement?

They look fine to me... but they could have grown straighter are you using a dim light?? my guess is that a high powered light will blast them straight up haha

They're in a closet which is pretty near a skylight, so my bro's been opening the closet door during daylight hours. On the next flush I'll tell him to use something more direct, thanks.

Hmmm. My guess is that when those caps open up a few of them are going to have "hair lips".

Sorry, should have said "hare lip". The edge of part of the cap is curled up, sometimes far enough to expose the gills in that area. Here's a rather poor picture of what I am talking about.

This was caused by verticillium. I could be wrong but some of the fruits in your picture show signs of it.

Actually there are already a couple like that, even though the rest aren't big enough yet to break veils. What causes it?

It's called verticillium, a common fungus. It is a parasite of the mushroom fruitbody and isn't too serious in minor cases like yours. Your flush(es) will be smaller but the fruits are still edible.

My friend just lost most of the first flush of three bulk casings to verticillium. The casing was very contaminated thanks to a stupid error on his part, and the pins were destroyed before they grew to even 1/4".

Well apparently this flush is basically good and edible... will subsequent flushes be okay? Can I take any steps to deal with this now or avoid it in the future?

Yeah, the flush is ok to eat. Like I said it's a very common mold. TMC describes it as the most common fungal parasite of the mushroom crop. It also says that it is primarily transmitted by flies, mites and cultivators. So be clean.
