Spawn bag casing help ??
    #18454300 - 06/21/13 11:02 PM (11 years, 6 months ago)

Ok I have a grain spawn bag 1 pound it does not have a layer of verm
On the top it's all grain , once fully colinzed can I cut the bag open put a casing layer and
Put tin foil on outside because of pinning .. Would that work ? Do I have to crumble the cakes and re case them or leave it as is and put verm on top and most .. Some help! "I think leaving as is and adding verm would be quicker"

You should definately spawn it to bulk substrate. You get more yield and better outcomes. You should follow damions tek if you don't have a PC. (pressure cooker). It's some sexy stuff

You do not need a PC to properly pasteurize a bulk substrate.

Just a big pot an a lid.

What did you mean by this then?

Damion5050's tek is a bulk substrate tek.

A pressure cooker sterilizes, not pasteurizes, so we would not need a PC for this step regardless.

Unless you were using the PC as a big pot, without any pressure build up.

Maybe as a big pot, but not as a pressurized vessel.

If they did, they came closer to sterilization than pasteurization.

Pasteurization is keeping the substrate between 140F and 165F for 60 to 90 minutes.

This can be accomplished with any pot and lid.

Calebd22, you should spawn to a pasteurized bulk substrate once your spawn is fully colonized.

Proper pasteurization of the substrate is recommended, but if you are just going to do coir and verm, then Damion5050's tek will most likely be just fine.
