BRF to Rye Grain Transfer (First Time Grower)
    #18451978 - 06/21/13 01:22 PM (11 years, 6 months ago)

I currently have six cakes in my FC right now (some on the second flush and some still on the first:mushroom2:) and I have one jar still colonizing. The jar is approximately 50% colonized and I would like to use it to make rye grain spawn. How can I go about doing this? Can I take the half colonized substrate, crumble it up, and put it in a jar with the rye grain (following normal sterilization procedure)? Do I have to wait for full colonization?

I have some doubts about this jar because there seems to be an area that it will not colonize (perhaps it’s too wet idk not really sure). The Mycelium is colonizing fairly quickly from the top of the jar down. However, on one side of the jar it has stopped at the area mentioned before and doesn't seem to be growing any more on that particular side. The other side is colonizing normally.
Sorry if this has been discussed before. I did do a search, but came up empty handed. Thanks in advance!

I seen others post scenarios like this before, and the advice given was don't try to multiply that jar, it may have stalled because of contamination.  I've also heard it said that you should try to flip the jar upside down to get the bottom to drain and hopefully you'll get full colonization.  But don't flip it again because you've disturbed the vermiculite barrier by flipping.

Use one of the jars that went 100% with no problem as spawn.
