I'm a little rusty on my Iranian history. I dated an Iranian chicklet once... that probably donsn't count for much.

I know one thing, I like their food. I used to work with a bunch of them. Between their food, and the opium we used to smoke on breaks, I like Iranians! They were always really nice to me too. The boss took the whole company to New Orleans for a week. His parents came over from Iran for the week to. I spent half the week smoking dope and getting drunk with his dad. Neither one of us could understand a word either one was saying, but we laughed our asses off and had a great time.

Yup. In 1953, the US lead a coup to overthrow (and, as it turns out, assasinate) then Iranian Premiere Mohammed Mossadeq, and replace the government in Iran with the puppet government of the Shah. In the late 70's, the Shah of Iran and the Ayatollah Khomeini shared power in some bizzaro struggle that isn't entirely unlike Russia in the early 90's when Yeltsin and Gorbachov were both legitimate leaders of the country.
So while the regime in power is not a direct descendant of the US installed puppet government of the 50's, it is it's brother in spirit. Aided, of course, by US involvement in the Contra affair and playing both sides against the middle (for purely political gains) with Iran and Iraq for the last 30 years. Or so.

Remember the 70s? The Iranian Revolution? It was pretty big news when I was a kid. I'm not disputing that we put the Shah in power, but he's been gone for 30+ years.

I do, yes. What I'm saying is that, in spirit, little has changed. The names and faces, for sure...
If what you're asking is don't I think that the Iranian revolution in '79 changed the way the Iranians sat within the US political game in the mideast, then yes, I do. Khomeini was actually more willing to get in bed with the US (see again: Iran-Contra affair)
I'm just saying - meet the new boss; same as the old boss.

shakta said: This may come as a shock, but I don't like the way the Republicans have handled the situation. The program blamed the Republican congress for not following through with the promises that were made to NK. Their reasoning was the same as Bush's though. They did not want to be blackmailed by NK. I can see this side of things, but wouldn't it have been worth it? Maybe so, maybe no. I don't really know.
It sounds like you disagree with Bush's policy, but do you really think we're being blackmailed? North Korea is one of the few reamaining Communist countries, and without the Soviets to defend them, they are more concerned than ever about their survival. It only seems logical that they would feel a need to build up their defense.
Then the US comes along and says "hey, only our allies are allowed to have WMD. Stop building them. North Korea asked "why shouldn't we be allowed to defend ourselves?" So Carter made a wonderful deal (under the Clinton administration) to give them oil and energy in exchange for not building WMD. I'm sure some North Koreans were outraged, because what if the US should attempt to invade North Korea someday (as we're now talking about doing)? But they accepted the offer anyways. Too bad Bush thought we were being blackmailed. Personally, I think we're blackmailing North Korea by saying "stop building up your defense or we'll blow the shit of you".
Even if you think it is blackmail, a little oil might be better than the mess we're in now, wouldn't it?
