Psilococo (swiss miss and a spent cake)
    #1842586 - 08/22/03 11:40 PM (20 years, 7 months ago)

Ok so I just tried making some hot chocolate using a spent brf cake. I used a half pint pftek cake for this little experiment. I broke it up and boiled it in some water. I then boiled the water and filtered it with a plastic coffee filter. poured equal amounts in 4 cups, added swiss miss coco, and then added a little more hot water.

4 people each got a cup of this coco and all reported a very mild trip that lasted about 45 mins. Next time im going to use 2 cakes split into 2 servings and see how it goes.

I was also planning on doing this with spent cakes

Is it possible that the 4 people were getting placebo affects, or was it a DEFINITE weak trip?

placebo is a def possibility but Im fairly sure I was trippin for like 30-45 mins... I got the onset of a powerful trip without the actuall trip really. I got really hyper and got the body trip but then it faded to soberness rather than a full blown trip.

You shouldn't boil the cake -- you should always steep in hot water.

1. bring water to near boiling (not quite as heat breaks down psiloc(yb)in)
2. remove from heat
3. add cake
4. cover and let sit for a few minutes

You can bring the water to boiling, just let it sit for a minute, then pour it over the cake, and wait a while.  LIke you'd do tea.

With the experiment you'll definately need to up the dosage if its comming from a cake. 2:2 sounds good for next time. You can also do it with acidic juices.

near boiling, like when the small bubbles start forming on the side and before they really start bubbleing, or even before that?

pretty much just make it hot enough so the cake can sit in it for a few minutes and the tea will still be hot afterwards. when the bubbles start forming is probably ok.

All I can say is: Gross... At least you filtered it...

Spent cakes can be nasty, I have dunked some before and the water stinks and turns yellow from mycelium excrement. But, I am fairly sure you will have better results using spent cakes over fresh ones. The mycelium is said to have more actives when it is older, or has already gone through a fruiting. I just have to wonder what the flavor would be like...

It's a good idea for sure to not let a spent cake go to waste, great that you got effects from it. I suggest you add a little citric acid or similar to the hot water to aid in extraction. It would also be wise to put it in a blender, or a bigger jar and shake it up, then let it soak in hot (not boiling) water. Another method would be to freeze the cake first to rupture cell walls, this would also aid in extraction. If you combine these suggestions with the others, you can end up with a very efficient brew. I use these tips for freshie tea so I assume it would help similarly with a cake.
