Clone from Porcini Butter?
    #18446621 - 06/20/13 11:07 AM (10 years, 10 months ago)

Ok, so I have this delicious Porcini butter that I bought.

MMMmmm so good!!

Now, before I finish it off I wondered something. I have been getting into some Agar work recently and have a few dishes I have made waiting to transfer some King Oyster tissue too. But some dishes will be available for experimentation. Would it be possible to pick out a piece of mushroom matter from this delicious butter and rinse it off and put it to agar and possibly get some growth? I imagine there will be contam issues that I will have to transfer away from a few times to get a clean culture. But does this seem possible? Or will this just be a nightmare of contams that would be a waste of effort?

Unfortunately Porcini (Boletus edulis) is a mycorrhyzal species, and basically cannot be cultured. It has to grow in association with a host plant.

Also, im pretty sure the mushrooms used in your (admittedly tasty looking) butter are cooked before hand, so probably wouldnt be much use for cloning anyway. Sorry to disappoint .

Cool, thanks for the response. I just finished the butter, but I left a couple specs of mushroom matter. I had a feeling the mushrooms were probably cooked beforehand. I'll probably put these specs to agar just to see what happens, since I have extra dishes. But I will expect complete failure. I guess porcini's inability to be cultured and need for a host plant would explain why no one sells cultures of it.

*edit*
The ingredients say Dried Porcini, so maybe they were not cooked?

It can be cultured and the are places that sell cultures, getting it to fruit, probably requires a host, but maybe not.

It's unlikely that you'll get a clone from dried porcini, maybe some of the spores in the butter will be viable.

I will probably put the remaining bits to agar tonight.

falcon, who sells porcini(Boletus edulis) cultures online? I can't find cultures for it on aloha medicinals, out-grow, or sporeworks.

It looks like Penn state offers a culture through their program, if you have that kind of money to toss around.

Penn state, and I think there's a European culture bank that might have it, I don't have a link  though.
