Strange drying issues
    #18433005 - 06/17/13 05:22 PM (11 years, 6 months ago)

Hey guys, long time no post. I've been at this for a while and have never had a problem. Just looking for insight.

I've had a couple harvests which were fine fresh, but after drying they seemed to have lost all potency and only make me feel downsy and ill.
I dry in front of a fan for a couple days, then move them to a tuperware with damp-rid in the bottom. I've made a wire mesh platform so they never touch the damp-rid.
When dry, they look great and smell/taste correct.
Obviously I started with a print, directly into grain jars. Then grain to verm/coir/manure.

I want to blame it on the drying because during a harvest I had a couple fresh w/ no adverse reactions. I will be getting some silica gel soon, but I've never had a Problem using damp-rid. Any ideas?

My last batch I didn't quite dry all the way. Then when i ate em they made me sick, but if you dried totally thats not the problem obviously.

I'm not familiar with damp rid but thats the only other thing it could be from my point of view.

The longer it takes them to get cracker dry, the more potency loss there will be.

You do want them to dry as fast as possible....this is why dehydrators with high heat are recommended.

As for your potency loss, maybe it's just shitty genetics....How many times did you eat them and they had no effect?

I thought of that too- maybe I AM fan drying for too long. I've always done it like that, but I can switch it up. I've never had potency issues.

I tried twice with the first flush and twice with the second. I hate using chemicals or silica to dry, I think I'm gonna get a dehydrator eventually. You'd think after a couple years of doing this i'd have all the top notch equipment...nope.

I'll try fan drying them faster, and I'll look into a dehydrator.

Or for 10 bucks more you can get the FD-80 @ Amazon shipped to your door, which blows that model out of the water.

Or you can just get the FD-37 for under $40.

There is no need for a fancy thermostat.

Thermostat, more area per tray, higher power motor, higher heat (if wanted)...  Don't get me wrong it doesn't hold a candle to the 200$ slide out tray models, but when your dealing with such a close price range, why settle?  (Not to mention the 37 is notorious for having a load fan)

Edit....  deer hunter and I make my own jerkey, while it is of course not the same as drying shrooms, the good a and bads of these dehydrator still apply.

Load fan? What do you mean?

And the FD-80 does not have "higher heat" than the FD-37....they both go up to 155F.

EDIT: The FD-37 is actually set a tad higher than the 80....it is preset to 160F, where as the fd-80 only goes up to 155F.

The fd-37 looks just fine to me. I've aquired so many things in this hobby but never a dehydrator.

Like a seal-a-meal. Found one at the thrift store with the bags. I used it once to make grain bags. I hve no problem with it, but I have so many jars that I just never used it again. I guess I need to condense my equipment anyways.

Thanks for all your help guys. I'll try not to stay away for so long.

Used to have a 37...  fan was loud as heck. (So is my uncles, but he still uses his...  mine made it to a good will box)

As far as heat I guess I was wrong, I thought heat output for the 37 was locked at 150. (Bad memory I guess)  But the 80 is adjustable up to 160 as well (I actually had to go to the kitchen to check to make sure)

if you have shrooms to dry, you can use a heat lamp in the mean time to add heat while fan drying.

I found a dehydrator at a second hand store. It uses heat convection and doesn't have a fan. I'm testing it out as we speak but I'm gonna keep the receipt just in case it's no bueno. Thanks for the help eveybody, I'll report back from the front lines.

Well, it works great! It's probably about 18 diameter, and came with 6 tiers. Where has this thing been my whole life? $18.74 too good.

The holes in the trays a a little big so I'm gonna custom some wire mesh in-lays to keep my little buddies from falling in.

Thanks again everyone. You're the best :excitedseal:

I fan dry but put a box over the fan and try it on the highest setting possible--usually cracker dry in a day or so.

Also, I break up the stem into 5 strands or so which has a jellyfish like appearance. Helps get them drier quicker.

Shit, Ed, I haven't seen you around in a long time :hi:

Sounds like you did the right thing. I was going to jump in and mention that thrift stores are great for cheap cheap dehydrators but you already figured that out.

:highfive:
