Why (Hydroton)
    #18444773 - 06/19/13 10:00 PM (11 years, 6 months ago)

I have a set up I'm using with hydroton and two bubble walls connecting to an air pump. Half the cakes are half pint and half of them are quarter pint jars. On the half pint cakes they only grew one or two mushrooms and the caps looks slimy, though it could be the strain (South Africans) And on the quarter pint cakes they pinned a lil bit then just aborted, I haven't seen any growth in days. They look very dried out also. I'm completely new to using this method and I'm not sure if I should stick with it or just go back to using perilite. I have no holes in the tank and am only able to fan once or twice a day because I work all the time, I'm thinking the lack of FAE is a major problem. Should I cut small holes in the top and set up a computer fan on the side? Also, I don't very much care for this strain as they are very small fruits. Can anyone recommend something that grows as big as "b+", as easy, but more potent. Thank you!

The small fruits are likely due to your setup...  A cube is a cube is a... well except for penis envy.

If you want something almost assured to be stronger than you normal cube go pe or go wood lover/exotic.  As far as ease of growth, all cubes can be grown virtually the same.  (Maybe pe won't work as well on cakes, but idk...)

Anyway it sounds like you know at least one of your issues (probable lack of fae) and your hydroponic/bubbler may be "over misting" your cakes as well...  find a way to fix it or k9ve back to what previously worked for you.

Those style terrariums will give less than ideal conditions and were outdated a decade ago.  Build a shotgun terrarium and simply mist a time or two a day.

So I can't use the hydroton? I like the idea of being able to use it over and over and not have to mess with buying perilite. Do you think it would help if I put some holes in this terrarium I'm using now?

You can use perlite over and over as well...  just bake it (not sure on specific temp as I haven't used it, but a quick use of the search bar should reveal any info you need on reusing perlite)
