Not TOO secure. Can be intercepted, so I hear. The new 5.2 has encryption, but you have to buy a certificate.

Insecure, not encrypted.

Trillian and Gaim have encryption functions, but the encrypted Gaim's Windows support isn't exactly too easy to install, last I checked you had to compile the stuff yourself which isn't exactly newbie-friendly.

Oh!
http://gaim-encryption.sourceforge.net/

Thing is, both sides have to use the Gaim client if you want encryption.

Not secure at all. AOL is known to log activity from "questionable" members.

If you want to talk with someone, stay off of AOL's servers and simply use an ICQ chat program. I recommend X-Chat

not very safe at all, hell...I used to fuck with my friends all the time and use progz like sub7 and backorfice to view thier AIM convos in real time, all it took was an IP address.

yea, very true...however if someone really wanted to see your convo they could use better means of giving you the server, however I don't think that police, fbi, etc. have the legal right to do anything like that, I really wouldn't worry about it unless you have convos about killing the president and shit like that.

Conversations in AIM aren't very secure without a certificate, and everyone having the same certificate isn't very secure either. Certificate like AIMEncrypt.com's and other freely downloadble ones is like giving everyone the same key to your encrypted text. Bad idea.

You can go and create your own, self-signed certificate. Although it's easy on Linux, it took me a lot of research to figure out howto do it successfully in Windows. Well, I wrote up a GUI for any of you that might not want to do the command-line version.

The links with more information to howto create your own self-signed certificate and importing it into AIM are at:

http://secure.sylikc.net:8080/self_signed/
or just http://sylikc.net/?secure, and find the HOWTO on the bottom.

Now then you won't have to use a freely downloadable (insecure) certificate, just DIY.

How about Trillian Pro 2.0 ?? it has AIM, MSN, YAHOO & ICQ ... is that safer ?

Trillian has an encryption plug-in as well.
Otherwise, it's just as safe/not-safe as AIM.
